When to Renovate vs Replacing
A few weeks ago, when my wife and I relocated to our new rented apartment, we encountered one of those timeless domestic disputes. My wife had a glance at our sitting room chairs, and decided that they needed to go. From her point of view, they appeared too old and would not fit in with our new place. She was so sure that she was even willing to chip in on the new ones.
I had a completely different perspective. These chairs had done their job for seven years. The wood frames were solid and strong, not one broken piece or structural issue. They were a little aged, faded and torn covers and soggy edges; but these were purely not a big deal of problems.
Even with my wife’s nagging and increasing pressure to get new ones, I couldn’t bring myself to spend a fortune on new furniture while renting. It was causing friction between us, but then it hit me; renovation might be just the response we needed.
So without consulting my wife, I stopped by a furniture store to look at refurbishment possibilities. And it was surprisingly affordable. Only one fourth as much as new chairs would have cost us. So the next day, I had the furniture do the work without my wife knowing anything about it. When my wife came back from shopping that evening, she was blown away by seeing what she had written off as unsaveable turned into sophisticated new beauties with new upholstery and a new life.
This experience taught me a key lesson about family living. Occasionally the best move isn’t to acquire new furniture for your home, but to elevate your current. This is particularly the case if you reside in a rental apartment. It’s an excellent way to ensure that the hearty, well-built furniture of yesterday is kept around when possible, and these kinds of renovative upgrades can make a lot of difference without hunting your pocket.
It’s more logical to reserve new furniture purchases for when you transition into your own home. Until then, renovation is a clever and inexpensive alternative to replacement. Good quality furniture that holds up well structurally is worth restoring rather than discarding, especially when it’s just surface damage.
The lesson here is simple; do not trash something because it’s old, you should first consider if renovation is the answer. This is especially the case for rented apartments. The only time it really makes sense to buy new furniture is when you’re moving into your own place or when the old stuff is truly beyond reimbursement.
