Void, Spite, and Resurgence in One Card

Hello, Splinterlands warriors!
Sometimes we see a new card and think, “This is a good card.” But there are also cards that make us stop for a moment and ask, “Wait, it’s already dead and it’s still attacking?” That was more or less my first impression when I met Withered Old Sage, a monster from the Drakoshan bloodline that comes with a rather troublesome fighting style.
Withered Old Sage costs 6 mana. At maximum level, it has 3 Magic Attack, 4 Speed, 3 Armor, and 5 Health. For a 6-mana monster, I think these stats are quite well balanced. A Magic Attack of 3 already packs a decent punch, Speed 4 keeps it from being too slow, while 3 Armor gives it a little extra breathing room. Its 5 Health is certainly not enough for me to call it a walking wall, but overall, the stats are still interesting.

What really makes this card different, of course, are its abilities: Void, Spite, and Resurgence.
First, there is Void. This ability reduces damage from Magic attacks by 50%. If the opponent only has 1 Magic Attack, the attack does not even deal any damage. So when facing a Magic team, Withered Old Sage can be an extremely annoying opponent. It is like someone who opens an umbrella before the rain starts—the opponent’s Magic attack is already cut down before it even reaches his body.
Then there is Spite. This is the part I find the most fun. When Withered Old Sage is defeated, it still performs one counterattack with a 100% chance. So death turns out not to be the end of the story. If an enemy monster is already low on Health, this final attack can determine the outcome of the battle.
And it doesn’t stop there. There is also Resurgence, an ability that allows it to revive once during the battle with 100% Health and 100% Armor. Magic buffs and debuffs are also reset. Indeed, during the round when it revives, it does not perform a normal attack, but its revival deals 1 Physical damage to all units.

This is where I see the interesting side of this card. The opponent may already feel that they have successfully taken it down, but it turns out we still have one extra chapter. That is how Splinterlands can be sometimes: you already feel like you have won, and then the opponent’s card gets back up. It feels like you have already closed the door, only to discover that the person still has a spare key.
In my opinion, the best position for Withered Old Sage is the second position. A strong tank should be placed in front, while the Sage stays behind it. Its relatively low Health makes me uncomfortable using it as the main tank. It is better suited as a support monster that survives while applying Magic pressure and waiting for the opportunity to strike back.
Of course, it has weaknesses. Its Health is low, and its main defensive ability does not help much in certain situations.

However, that is exactly where I see the lesson. This card can become extremely strong when it enters an Equalizer ruleset, because its HP can become much higher depending on the opponent or our team, just like in this battle.
My impression: Withered Old Sage is an interesting 6-mana monster, especially when facing Magic teams. The strategy is fairly clear: place it in the second position behind the tank, use Void to withstand Magic attacks, let Spite deliver the final blow, and use Resurgence to gain a second chance at life.
For me, new features and cards like this make the Splinterlands collection feel increasingly alive. It is not just about increasing the number of cards, but about adding more strategic choices. And if a card can make your opponent think twice before attacking, I would say that is already a small victory.
