Opened 6K Merits on a Whim… and Pulled This Card!
![]()
Hello Splinterlands warriors,
warm greetings from the Brawl battlefield that’s sometimes busier than a morning market. This time, I want to share a simple story—about Merits collected little by little, then exchanged for Gladius Cases, and… well, opened a bit too early.
Usually, we wait for a nice round number: 10k merits for 5 cases. It feels almost sacred. But for some reason, this time I stopped at 6k merits. Not perfect, not ideal, but enough for 3 Gladius Cases. And honestly, curiosity won over patience.

So I headed to the Guild Shop, exchanged my 6k merits, and without much hesitation… opened the cases right away.
Opening Before the “Right Time”
I know this wasn’t the wisest decision.
If I had waited a bit longer, I could’ve gotten more packs.
But sometimes in life—and in Splinterlands—we need to make slightly reckless choices. Not because they’re logical, but because we want to know the outcome now.
I chose flip all. And as usual, the cards started revealing themselves one by one.
At first, the results were pretty entertaining:
- Captain Katie
- Ajax Lightfoot
Two rare cards that were nice to get, though not quite enough to make me jump out of my seat.

Then came that moment. On the 7th card, the screen suddenly shook. And when that happens, it usually means only one thing.

And sure enough, there it was—Xulax Nightwind. I paused for a second. Not because I couldn’t believe it, but more like… “ah, so this is why I couldn’t wait earlier.”
Sometimes, impulsive decisions find their own way to justify themselves.

And it didn’t stop there. In the last five cards, I found myself smiling again. Because there it was—Quora Towershead. This card is always a joy to pull. Not only is it powerful, but it often becomes the centerpiece of many Brawl strategies.
If you want to see the full card opening process, you can check it here:
After the excitement settled, I moved on to what’s often more important: checking upgrades. And it turns out Xulax Nightwind could level up right away.
With that upgrade, it gained the Thorns ability.

At this point, I started to see its potential more clearly.
Not just as a damage dealer, but also as a painful tank in the Death element. Enemies attack—but they get hurt too. A simple concept, yet often very effective.
Reflection: Between Patience and Instinct
Thinking back, this experience feels like a small reminder:
- Sometimes patience matters
- But sometimes, following your instinct isn’t wrong either
The Gladius and Merits system is interesting because it offers a different sense of progression. You can’t just buy these cards freely. You have to join Brawls, stay involved, and be patient. And that’s exactly where the satisfaction comes from.
My takeaway is simple:
Even though I only opened 3 Gladius Cases, the experience felt more “alive” than opening many with average results.
There was surprise, there was a story, and there were new cards I could use right away.
Closing
My strategy going forward is pretty simple:
- Stay active in Brawls
- Focus on leveling up gladiators with strong potential
- And… maybe occasionally still open cases early 😄
Because in Splinterlands, not every decision has to be perfect…
what matters is having a story worth remembering afterward. ⚔️
