Nineties Ska Bands! Tunes That Didn’t Make It Mainstream But Had Rad Tunes! 💿 Major Label Bands & Bonus Indie Label Tunes!

Today’s theme is ska bands who got the big major label deal but didn’t get the success they should have at the time! Some did later on albums a few years later and some never did! But these four songs/bands all were on major record labels and had the big deal! The fans just didn’t come (yet). I’ll also throw in a bonus tune that wasn’t a major label band but tunes I think should have been hits!

Onto the tunes! Let’s go! 🎸

First Tune! 🎶

First up it’s No Doubt! Yes No Doubt, with the 1992 album “No Doubt” on a big label and they got no fame and fortune! Obviously we know they did 4 years later but the first album bombed commercially! I go with the lead single “Trapped In A Box” from the 1992 self titled album.

Second Tune! 🎶

Second up it’s the band Goldfinger & the song “Superman” from 1998’s album “Hang-Ups”. The second Goldfinger record came out in early 1998, after some MTV play in 1996 the hype was wild! After 1997’s mega ska success from bands like Mighty Mighty Bosstones & No Doubt the expectations were huge! Now first off the song did get a lot of attention after being on Tony Hawk Pro Sk8er video game but in terms of radio play & MTV it got nothing big. This song should have had similar success to songs like The Impression That I Get but it didn’t.

Third Tune! 🎶

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones did finally get a huge hit single with 1997’s “The Impression That I Get ” but did you know they were on a major label for two albums prior to it released in 1993 & 1995? They got no mainstream mega success even with the major label push. They did appear in the 1995 movie Clueless but besides that no big radio play outside Southern California. It just shows labels used to give bands time to grow & progress. Enjoy the song “Someday I Suppose” from the 1993 album “Don't Know How to Party”

Fourth Tune! 🎶

It’s the band Less Than Jake! Unfortunately unlike Bosstones & No Doubt they never got the success later from later releases. Less Than Jake released two albums on major label Capital records in 1996 & 1998. Besides some Soundtrack attention thanks to the label they never got any big mainstream success or MTV/Radio play. I pick the single “History Of A Boring Town” from 1998 album “Hello Rockview” a song that should have been a hit!

For my bonus tunes it’s the bands Edna's Goldfish & Spring Heeled Jack. Two late nineties ska bands who were on small record labels and each had a really catchy single that I saw on MTV but only on late Sunday night show “120 Minutes” which featured more underground bands. I personally think both these tunes below should have been big radio singles similar to how the Bosstones has a huge hit.

It’s the band Five Iron Frenzy and the song
“Handbook for the Sellout” from the 1998 album “Our Newest Album Ever!”. Another band who was on a tiny tiny record label and due to that didn’t get the mainstream push. Obviously as we can see above that doesn’t promise success but it definitely helps!
