πŸŽƒπŸ§™β€β™€οΈπŸ•―οΈ It's Movember and Hallowind πŸ’¨πŸƒ πŸ€£πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

I can't believe that is Movember 😱 - are you doing something for Movember movement? I have decided I want to go for it this year... and see how I look like with a moustache again...

What's Movember? πŸ‘‰ https://movember.com (quite a thing in New Zealand, I would say)

Tomorrow is my first day, which aligns very much nicely like the #HPUD event πŸ€—πŸ˜‰ - no promises on looking like this... but it sure feels like I can become that in a month!

It's Halloween and this week has been fricking crazy! Today and tomorrow, and over the #HPUD it's just going to be a non-stop weekend for me. I am exhausted... but still full of energy to write this post.

Yes, still on WeWard... but failing to lead...

We have a couple of Hivieans there...

If you want to join, you are welcome!

Aside from general steps, ghosts, pumpkins, cute things, gothic stuff, dark πŸ–€ loving feelings... and all the forky stuff... I have been really craving for some fresh air lately.

Typical Wellington Windy Day 😎

And given the pictures, freeze the movement and take all the energy from the "how it looks like" when you are in these situations... I think AI can quickly "exemplify" how it "actually" felt when you were in this place.

Exageration of how it looks like if the picture above was a video, but would make you feel like the actual reality, TBH

Anyhow, aside from the need for some oxygen, it has been pretty much work work work work...

🧐 Hive Influence 😏

And within... the intervals, null moments, etc... it was the usual, catch ups, games, keep X alive, and doing some work on my (hive.atexoras.com:2096) Hive API... which is now 1.28.7 and soonish will be 1.28.8... and I suspect that SOONish too, I will start a new migration to 1.28.9.

Previously, I was running 1.28.3 with some "upgrades", but with the addition of IPv6 I got really motivated to make some effort for my own benefit, and also whoever uses my API node.

The hardware running this is not the fastest to "replay", but it's keeping WAY more people than just myself happy, apparently.

My anonymised cloudflare stats

If you can notice, the bottom-left graph has a big change in "pink" bars to less pink? That's when I changed from 1.28.3 to 1.28.7... and some other enchancements/CVE's/fixes.

So, running more efficiently... and 1.28.8 is almost ready. 😎 This API node, not witness... consensus nodes I am already on 1.28.8... where that IPv6 thing is working wonders!

https://hive.arcange.eu/witnesses

What's the difference between an API node and a witness node?

A witness node is what's called a "consensus" node, which is basically responsible for verifying the chain's "consensus" against block broadcasts. Aka, verify blocks and make sure they are processed through the "rules" implied by the code. Protecting the chain against "alien" cryptographic code execution attacks.

A Hive API node (or Hive Full Node) is a node that can "serve" most of the basic Hive features, and where you could direct "most" apps to do your daily work...

For example, on @keychain, if you want to do your normal stuff... you need a Hive API node! A consensus node will not work here.

Some other examples, if you go to either:

And selecting the Hive API node of your choice... they will all need a FULL node, or Hive API node that can respond to the general queries you do on-chain. Like:

This is what I vouch for the chain, being able to select these things and keeping your app "fully decentralised"...

So, I am not sure if I did a good job explaining this, but in a nutshell, an API node (which needs to be exposed on the internet, vs a consensus node, which can be shielded by a firewall and still do its job) is a way more expensive, hard and challenging piece of software to run, compared with just a witnessing node...

What's the chain reward for a Hive API node? None... It's just infrastructure that witnesses OR anyone, for that matter, can run, in order to provide access to the chain's basic features.

Why do I run a Hive API node?

My main motivation was that, being located in New Zealand, I have some distance to the US or Europe, where most of the API nodes are located. So, since I have been a Hive Engine full node runner (for some years and before I decided to run a Hive API node), I grew an appetite to feel my "experience" as quickly as possible. So, that influenced me to run my own infrastructure.

From New Zealand... where I can now have near-instantaneous experience with almost any outputs you need from Hive!

When I mean instantaneous, it's like... really, really fast! As fast as your mouse click can go! And this should not be to my own credit... It's the contributors who add/fix the code... and make all these improvements that should be recognised.

If you need to verify who they are, check them here: https://github.com/openhive-network/hive

If you have a GitHub account and love this chain, then you should go there and ⭐"STAR" that place! Feedback on what you like is important to every Hive person.

It helps in many diverse ways... Find the way you most like to provide that, and go for it. You don't need to do anyone's bidding... but we (I) will keep reminding you of the options.

The AI hacking times?

Yes, I have two big posts I am working on to help the community, similar to this one I have done here.

And given I am writing this one post in a moment I am learning new things, I have already though about something else I can try (first) and then probably report on that after I find out how well it works.

So, in a sense, two big posts of that kind of category.

HAHAHA!! That avatar did a NO shave november instead of Movember πŸ˜†

I'm not doing the movember.. my beard growth would probably not even be noticed anyway πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Glad to see the updates on the witness part. Maybe soon I can join you - I have bookmarked the conversation we had about it, so I will get back to you... eventually 😁

I am aiming to report on a result by the end of the month... if that's going to be a public picture or not, I haven't decided on it yet.

Tomorrow is weekend, but I have to work too.

You can join me anywhere to talk about Hive nodes... I will be happy to teach anyone... I have done this to more than just one chain... but on Hive I have a special appreciation... given it's probably the chain with more time/experience and the one I enjoy more, the code rules.

Especially when level 1 key chains are being hacked as we speak...

Your dedication to keeping the API node updated is impressive especially since you manage it all during such a busy schedule. Growing a moustache for Movember sounds like a fun challenge to take on alongside the PowerUp Day excitement. Good luck with the busy weekend ahead.

Wow, my friendβ€”that’s a lot of information, but I’ve got a good grasp on the nodes and the distinction regarding the witness. Excellent work; you explained it very well. And your API, which runs so fast, is a major achievement.

Thanks for keeping us informed.

Have you used my API node? On which app? I found only today that on ecency you can actually see my node, and for the ones using the app (not the website), it can be a BRUTAL improvement (if you are close to New Zealand). If not choosing the node that is closer to you, makes the biggest improvement.

It's the HPUD (Hive Power Up Day), where everyone kind of gets together to power up. There are several initiatives (like mine). If you want to get into the draw, read the instructions at the start of the post. But not mandatory... obviously.

There are several tools that can follow this day progress. The one I like most is this:

https://powerup.hivecreators.co/live-event

But you also have this tool: https://hivebuzz.me/@thatgermandude

Powering up anytime is always great, but this event only accounts for the UTC first day of the month.

Appreciate the vote of trust. Don't forget to keep checking for the work other witnesses are doing. πŸ’ͺ

Hello. I don’t know much about APIs or nodes, but I’m gradually getting the hang of it thanks to your posts. It’s great to see Hive users connecting on other platforms! I’ve also started using an image-sharing platform called Pixagram; I love it! It seems I’m earning a token called "PIXA," and according to its creator, there will soon be an option to exchange it for Hive. I don’t fully understand how the exchanges work, but it sounds promising. I love everything related to Hive! I hope things go really well for you on WeWard, too.
Sending you lots of hugs! Oh, by the way, I’m playing a game by @rozioo on Hive https://rozioogames.com/?town=1&lang=en . Here’s the link in case you’re interested in playingβ€”there’s a truly spectacular town where we can interact and play.

It's a code replica of Hive, but with "different" witnesses protecting it. So, a different community.

The blockchain code behind it is configured differently.

I want to give it a try, and I tried, but the "phone number" was not working, even though I know how to create an account without it, I didn't bother yet.

The idea is nice... given there are a couple of features different from Hive, but I didn't yet had enough time yet to go and evaluate more for having a formed opinion. So, it's a "pending" for now...

I might actually rely on what I see others doing (including you), so go ahead exploring and learning. No wrong with that...

I just don't have the bandwidth... at the moment, but it's on my bucket list. πŸ˜‰

But for sure, keep these things coming. I really appreciate it (even if I don't have the time I thought I wish).

The most important fact is choice! You can swap around... to whomever you feel the best experience.

Choosing a node in decentralisation is not just because "one" will be the best... it actually depends on where you are. If you travel, it actually makes a difference to choose different ones, because the comms to that node change in performance.

So, it's not a "best one"... it's a "we must have many!" thing... in order to operate worldwide.

I liked your explanation. I thought that a witness node could also expose an API to use the hive network.

Movember started for me already in September xD But I'm trimming my beard every 2–3 weeks.

Last month I missed HPUD. I was so in the zone that I recognized my mistake only on 4th October. But this month I learned from my mistake. Let's see if I can win the ATX price aka hive delegation.

I thought that a witness node could also expose an API to use the hive network.

And it can... but I would not advise doing that.

As in, the configuration to run it in witness mode should be different from the one running in API mode, where you are exposed to anyone... and this is not because of Hive code is bad... It's because of a default way of protecting against stupidity.

These are IT strategies that reduce surface attacks.

For us noobs, what would be the easiest way to "convert" a full Hive node into a HIVE API node? I suppose after the words "us noobs," everyone loses motivation to read further... πŸ˜‚

Btw, happy HivePUD!!! Nice ATX power-up! πŸ˜ƒ

Old full nodes suck (sorry for the comparison) compared with the normal HIVE API node. And here I am assuming a full node means a normal HIVEd with history.

The HIVE API node will be the HAF implementation, which supports other applications and features for front ends, etc. By the way, noobs like us (including me) are the reason I love to teach and learn. So, I love to be considered a noobie :D - let's learn!

You will need a lot more space (2-3+ TB), preferably NVMe, but SSDs will do too (just gonna be slower to replay the entire thing). Instead of just 2-4 cores, I would recommend at least 8, because you will be running Postgres (which loves cores). And memory really depends, but at least 24-32GB (especially if you run ZFS as the filesystem that supports the docker images).

Happy to guide you through... or anyone with what I learned as usual.

Well, now that you've laid down the specs, I think we will have to go up in rankings to afford something like that... With the recent memory pumps, I suppose my machine from 2 years ago is still a "good deal" πŸ˜‚

Just checked the specs:

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1270v6
Memory: 32 GB DDR4
Storage: 2x450 GB SSD NVMe

Double tripling the space, and the rest maybe could serve... πŸ˜ƒ

0
0
0.000
avatar

That is very capable for an API node right now (previously was not because you would need more memory).

But now the shared file for the HiveD is so small, that the rest of the memory can easily be used for the PostgreSQL performance and ZFS cache.

Might struggle a bit on the replay, because of the only 8 threads, but it will be able to finish. The heavier part of the replay (populating the DB and creating indexes) is IO bound, so if you SSDs can take a lot of IO/s, that amount of CPU will be fine for serving afterwards. It will flat out during replay, but depending on how much IO/s you can squeeze from ZFS it might handle the job with some time.

You won't be able to serve A ton of users, but will be able to do easy 1 Million calls per day I reckon. And if you are looking like me, for a personal super fast API node, then I can tell you, its MEGA amazing!

That DDR4 is gold! :D LOL I have to convert my 16 core AMD fast 64 DDR4 into a slower 128GB DDR4 mobo :D with some DIMMS I have left. But before that, I have to convince wife to upgrade my personal machine PC into a DDR5 recent CPU thing... and I am not sure if the plafond will be approved ;P

Note, when you are replaying, don't expose things yet, test internally that you see the swagger interface and such... then let me know when you are there, as there are a couple changes you might need to do, depending on how you setup the access to external.
