The Goonies Silver Bones Skelton Key

This past Saturday I was putting together my post for the Saturday Savers group. I always look for some good deals on precious metals to share in case someone is interested in picking up a good deal. Just by chance, I came across a coin that I hadn't seen before, but I knew exactly what the coin was made to replicate. An object from the classic film The Goonies.

The copper bones skeleton key is an important part of the movie, and the island nation of Niue is releasing this silver two Troy ounce commemorative coin to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film's release in 1985. It's a very cool looking coin, have a look:

I really love the design of this coin, and it comes from a movie I've always enjoyed over the years. It's produced by the New Zealand Mint and only 500 will be minted. These will sell out fast, I haven't seen it's price yet, but likely will be on the high side. This is one I would consider buying with plans to flip it in a few years.

A sequel to the original film was announced to be in the works early this year, and it is involving Steven Spielberg. That might be a great time to flip it when the movie comes out!

The Goonies

This 1985 film has over the years become a cult classic. It has a cast packed with future big name actors and based on a story written by none other than Steven Spielberg. It has been forty years since the film's first release and it still a popular classic film.

The movies premise revolves around a group of kids whose parents are facing foreclosures on their homes. However, the kids find an old doubloon and treasure map to an old pirate treasure. They figure out the map starts at an old restaurant, but it turns out to be the current hideout of a family of criminals. They manage to sneak past them but leaving one friend behind to call the police. He is captured by the criminals and spills the beans about the treasure, and the criminals start a chase to find the kids and the treasure.

The copper skeleton key is one clue they find along the way along with the corpse of a treasure hunter called Copperpot. It is required in order to find the treasure. From there the movie just becomes more fun, and if you missed it somehow over the years, it's a fun adventure film. I won't give away more spoilers though.

The skeleton key has become an iconic movie prop, replicas can be found fairly easily online. I tired to figure out where the original ended up, but had no luck. Chances are it was thrown out with old props at some point by the studio. But here is a replica I found online today:

Pretty cool work of art! I think I would rather have the one made of two solid ounces of silver though! But I certainly wouldn't mind one of these too. It's a shame I couldn't figure out where the original is, if it still exists. That would be a great piece of movie history to have in your hands, but it wouldn't come cheap either...
