Blue-Capped Motmot Silver Coin From Beautiful Belize!
This past week I shared a coin from the tropical paradise of Belize. As I mentioned last week it's a gorgeous place to visit with rain forests, beautiful beaches, and amazing reefs to dive. If you ever get the chance to visit don't pass it up, you won't regret it! Plus, it's the only country in Central America that speaks English instead of Spanish for all the non Spanish speakers out there!
Today I'm going to continue on with the silver coin series, with another coin that I purchased at the very same time in Phoenix, Arizona. There is a whole set of these for each year from 1975 until 1981 with decreasing mintages each year. These are relatively hard to find in good condition and the only two the shop had in stock I purchased because they were in such nice shape. Again, this was around 20+ years ago and so these are some older pictures from my laptop!
About the coin:
From numista.com
These were minted in Wawa, Pennsylvania, which is a suburb of Philadelphia for those interested. The Franklin Mint produced coins for many nations around the world in the 70's and 80's but have subsequently abandoned the precious metal products. It's a shame really, they made such nice stuff!
This particular set had a mintage of only 1,826, so relatively low. The bullion value of the the silver is $8.24 as of this morning with silver over $42 per Troy ounce. However, the collector's value will be much higher. I'm not sure what they run currently, but I would venture to guess around at least $20 or more.
What really caught my eye about this one is it is another animal coin, and I'm a sucker for animal coins!
The featured feathered creature on this coin is listed as the blue-crowned motmot. They are no longer called that for some reason, now they are the blue-capped motmot.

These beautiful birds are found in the rain forests from southern Mexico down through Central America on the side of the Caribbean Sea. Although fairly large in size at 15 to 17 inches (38 to 43 cm) they are hard to spot in the forest. Their colors act as great camouflage and they are relatively inactive so they are hard to spot.
They are known for the very distinctive tail that can be seen on the coin and in the second picture above. When I was in Central America on my several visits I don't believe I ever saw one personally. It would have been cool, but I spent more time in the water than in the rain forest! I probably should have spent some more time bird watching...
But a very beautiful bird and I can see why they celebrated it on their coins!
That will wrap up my post for this Wednesday, I do hope you enjoyed the coin and seeing the pictures of the real McCoy as well. Please feel free to leave any questions or comments below, and thank you for all of the support. I really do deeply appreciate it. Have a great Wednesday everyone!

I have never dealt with coins or money as such, but now, while cleaning out the basement, I found a box full of various coins and strange paper money. When the time comes, I will publish something.

That sounds cool! I'm not much of an expert when it comes to bills, but there are some valuable ones out there. It will be interesting to see what kind of coins you had hiding in the basement!

That's funny that it was for Belize but it was minutes in Pennsylvania! I like the seal on the back.
Born in Philly and off to Belize, then back to the US! I don't know if Franklin Mint shipped directly to the buyers or if Belize actually took delivery to sell themselves. If it was like Scottsdale Mint is today they might have sold them direct.
Greetings, I didn't know this information, of course I will add it to my list of pending trips. Greetings, by the way, where would you advise me to publish about Venezuelan currencies? I have some and many bills that have already expired due to inflation.

I didn't know the information about the island of Belize
That should be interesting to see! There isn't an official group that shares bills, just coins. Inflation has been rough of the economy down there in Venezuela. Belize is actually a country in Central America, the odd thing is the speak English, not Spanish!

Thank you @silversaver888 ! I don't know if they make commemoratives anymore, I haven't seen anything past the 1980's from Belize. The rain forest really does have a lot of beautiful birds, we don't have nearly as many colorful ones here in California!

Another beautiful Coin from the Franklin mint!👍😊
Such a shame, they stopped, minting, silver coins!🙄
I think Scottsdale Mint sure picked up where they left off and filled a void, they made some nice silver back in the day!
A beautiful bird.
I'm wondering if there are regular business strike of this coin for circulation or is this only for the silver commemorative series?
!PIMP
Aren't they pretty? Franklin only made commemoratives and circulation strikes. They produced proof and regular strikes though, these were the first I found on the non proof versions. The store had the two and I bought them, I haven't come across any others since!
!PIMP
That is such a beutiful coin, and certianly a beutiful birds.

I love animal coins, they're a lot of fun! I bet you have a lot of beautiful birds that live near you. The more tropical the weather the more beautiful the birds I've always found.
