Simple Minds and the Shimmering Magic of 1982

Hello hello silver bloggers, music lovers and Hello hivers!

One of my favourite days because it means a post on Hive will be written by me, and I get to hear other music that Hiveians enjoy. Well for the select band that participate in ttt anyway!

We are going back to my Silver Chronicles post of a few weeks ago My Soundtrack for the 80s my favourite decade

Quite a self-explanatory title and it is my inspiration for the next few posts on ttt!

The year is now 1982 and we are diving into a great Scottish band, albeit one that supports the wrong football team in my eyes!...

3 tunes from 1982 by Simple Minds

It is Tuesday and that of course means that it's #ttt or #threetunetuesday and so it's time to share some tunes with you!

@ablaze started #ttt 261 weeks ago! Go check out what it is all about on his latest post Ireland's Top 30 Songs of all Time (1, 2, 3) for Three Tune Tuesday - Week 261 - win some HBI

Do go support @ablaze as without him we would not have this mental fun musical activity that you can win HSBI from! I am happy to be one of the SIX sponsors and it is kinda fun checking out music from all over this global village of ours!

He has just released some winners posts, so go support those posts, he gets no support from any whales or even curation trails for these posts that he does. 261 weeks is an incredible amount of time, and I for one love that he runs this, and I appreciate the time and dedication that he puts in, when he could be doing something else.

Long live #ttt 😁🎼 and #threetunetuesday

The Band - Simple Minds

By 1982, Glasgow’s Simple Minds were already four albums deep into their career, and were respected by critics for their moody, post-punk art-rock but lacking major chart success.

Being huge Celtic fans I gave them a massive bodyswerve...

However, everything changed in September 1982 with the release of their fifth studio album, New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84). You could not avoid them lol!

This record was their creative "Holy Grail" if you like. It was a turning point where they shed some of their darker, abrasive edges for a shimmering, lush and atmospheric synth-pop sound.

Not only did it break them into the UK Top 3, but it helped define the "New Pop" movement of the early '80s. Jim Kerr’s soaring vocals, Charlie Burchill’s distinct guitar work, and Michael MacNeil’s masterful keyboard textures created a magnificent wall of sound that still feels timeless.

1982 was a banger of a year for them, and all three of these tunes were released in 1981.

Tune 1 - Simple Minds - Promised You A Miracle

You can’t talk about 1982 without this cracker of an ear worm!

Released in April 1982 as the lead single ahead of the album, this was the track that triggered the fluffing miracle for the band. Built around an incredibly infectious, upbeat bassline and an unforgettable brassy synth hook, it became their first-ever UK Top 20 hit. It marked a massive shift toward a brighter more accessible sound without losing their signature artistic depth. Mass fan appeal beckoned for them!

Tune 2 - Simple Minds - Glittering Prize

Arriving in August 1982 just a few weeks before the full album dropped, Glittering Prize is pure new wave romanticism. Driven by a rhythmic, driving bassline from Derek Forbes and shimmering keyboard melodies, the song showcases a softer, incredibly melodic side of Jim Kerr's songwriting. It remains one of the most elegant synth-pop tracks of the entire decade.

Tune 3 - Simple Minds - Someone Somewhere in Summertime

I thought I would include this live recording from Paisley Abbey of a couple of years ago.

Still has his voice Jim Kerr.

They are one band I never did see.

Released as the third single in November 1982.

Awesome stuff! Once I get through my jazz list I am playing here, I am going to have to check out some of their stuff. I really only knew the big hits before this.

They had a heap of stuff you might plough through.

It's incredible that it's the same band in the latest video. I liked the first two, and I loved the title of the first one. I think I'll use it for a short story. It's always good to hear from you. My grandmother used to say when she heard about someone who was lost: "A miracle, a seabird on land." Hugs
