When I Choose to Grow My SPS, Not Simply Hold It

Hello, Splinterlands warriors!

There was a time when I saw SPS (Splintershards) as nothing more than one of the tokens in Splinterlands. Now, my perspective has changed a little. By staking SPS, I can earn staking rewards, receive VOUCHERs, get certain bonuses in the game, and have a say in the direction of the ecosystem through governance.

When SPS became popular in 2021, it experienced an extraordinary rise. Its all-time high was around US$1.07 in July 2021. But the journey afterward was far from smooth. In June 2026, SPS even reached a low of around US$0.002680. Toward the end of August 2026, its price had returned to around US$0.0035. That means SPS is still down roughly 99.7% from its peak.

If the chart could talk, perhaps it would say, “Don't look at my past, sir.”

So, how much SPS do I have now?

Now, this is the part that makes me smile a little myself.

From my latest screenshot, my total balance is 22,329.4 SPS, with an estimated value of around US$77.47.

Interestingly, I am no longer simply holding SPS in my wallet.

I have already staked 22,125.285 SPS, earning 7.84% APR. Meanwhile, the SPS available under In-Game (LIQUID) is 204.115 SPS. I also have small balances on other networks: 1.302 SPS on Binance Smart Chain (BSC) and 0.01 SPS on Hive Engine.

I also have an incoming delegation of 1,000 SPS.

Roughly speaking, 22,125.285 SPS at an APR of 7.84% could generate around 1,734 SPS in a year, assuming the APR remains unchanged and the staking conditions stay the same.

For me, that number is actually more interesting than checking the SPS price every five minutes.

Because I have started thinking about it this way: if the price isn't ready to go up yet, at least the amount of SPS I own shouldn't be sitting around doing nothing.

Staking: a simple strategy that turns out not to be so simple

I have indeed left almost all of my SPS working. I don't really need a large amount of liquidity at all times, so rather than letting my SPS sit idle, I would rather stake it and earn a return.

But I also don't want to become someone who locks up all their money just because they see the words “7.84% APR.”

Because APR is not a guarantee of profit in rupiah.

For example, I might receive an additional 1,700 SPS in a year, but if the price of SPS falls by half, the value of my portfolio can still shrink. On the other hand, if the price of SPS rises while the number of tokens continues to increase, the effect could become much more attractive.

That is why I look at SPS investment from two perspectives: the number of tokens and the price of the token.

My biggest lesson

For me, the important question is no longer, “When will SPS return to US$1?”

A healthier question is:

“Is the Splinterlands ecosystem still growing enough that the SPS I accumulate today has a reason to be worth more in the future?”

That is a more difficult question. At the same time, it is a more honest one.

SPS remains a crypto asset with extreme volatility. Even with 7.84% staking, a decline in the token price can be far greater than the staking returns.

So, if I could give myself one piece of advice: don't chase a growing SPS balance while forgetting its value.

Stake when you are genuinely prepared to hold the tokens for the long term. Keep some liquidity available for other needs and opportunities. And most importantly, keep an eye on the development of Splinterlands, not just the color of the SPS candlesticks.

Because in the end, I don't want to own 100,000 cheap SPS that have no reason to be used.

I want to have SPS that grows in quantity, remains useful, and one day—hopefully—is valued by the market once again.

For now, I'll just let these 22,329 SPS work slowly.
