Vel: The Gardener Who Uncovered a Great Secret in Praetoria

Greetings, Splinterlands warriors.
After getting to know Grimbold, driven by vengeance, and Drowned Soulwarden, who made me suspicious of reflections on water, it’s time to meet the third character in the Visions of Verico series. This time, things feel a little more peaceful. No warhammers swinging, no strange reflections moving on their own. Just an Elf, some plants, and a mystery that turns out to be far bigger than gardening.
His name is Vel, an Elf with an Earth/Life combination, developed alongside Lilyfire, with contributions from Vugtis.
At first glance, you might think Vel is simply a gardener who happens to live in Praetoria. His hands are familiar with the soil. He can bring withered vines back to life and make flowers bloom in places that were once barren.

A noble profession, wouldn’t you say?
But it turns out Vel is more than just someone who diligently waters plants. His garden holds clues to something much bigger.
Plant roots can apparently serve as a guide to ancient secrets.
Vel was drawn to Praetoria by the flow of life magic he sensed there. Since then, he has tended to various places and paid close attention to the changes around him. To Vel, a garden is more than just a place to grow flowers or gather a harvest. Plants can also be a way to listen to nature.
Roots trace hidden currents beneath the soil, while flowers mark certain patterns that only he can interpret.
The longer he observes, the clearer it becomes that something is wrong.
The ley lines beneath Praetoria—the pathways along which magical energy flows—have begun to change. Even his observations of the stars seem to reinforce the clues he has been gathering. Something incredibly ancient and immensely powerful may be awakening at the end of this pattern.
And this is where Vel’s story gets interesting to me.
He would rather heal gardens than get involved in battles. Given the choice, he would probably prefer tending plants to picking up a weapon. But sometimes, life has its own way of dragging someone into much bigger problems.
Vel isn’t a hero rushing around to save the world just yet. For now, he is still observing, learning, and caring for the land he loves.
But who knows? One day, Praetoria might need more than just his gardening skills.
I like this kind of storytelling. Not every character has to be portrayed as a formidable warrior who solves problems with powerful attacks. Some characters draw their strength from patience, attention to detail, and the ability to understand things that others overlook.
In Splinterlands, we often get caught up in team compositions, card abilities, battle rules, and strategies for winning matches. All of these things matter, of course. But Vel reminds me that sometimes the little things we overlook can be clues to understanding much bigger problems.

Another lesson is not to jump to conclusions too quickly. Vel doesn’t immediately know what is happening beneath Praetoria. He gathers clues little by little, observes the changes, and then tries to understand how everything fits together.
This approach is useful for new players, too. Get to know your cards’ abilities, learn the battle rules, and don’t be afraid to observe other players’ strategies. Improvement doesn’t always come from big victories. It can also come from the habit of learning consistently.
My suggestion: Take some time to read Vel’s lore if you want to discover another side of Praetoria. Don’t just look at the thriving plants. Pay attention to the clues hidden behind them, too. Because in Splinterlands, even a gardener might be keeping watch over something that could change the future of the world.
