The 5-Mana Monster That Destroys the Melee Meta

Before the Escalation set arrived, I often thought of Dragon cards as powerful, high-mana monsters that were difficult to fit into various team compositions. That assumption changed when I started paying attention to Obsidian Dreadcore. At first glance, it looks intimidating—its body covered in dark obsidian chunks, as if it has just emerged from the belly of a volcano. However, what truly caught my attention wasn’t its design, but how this card can shift the course of a battle with only 5 mana.
As an Epic Dragon Monster from the mini set Escalation, Obsidian Dreadcore comes from the Golem Bloodline. To fully maximize it, you need 46 CC. At maximum level, it boasts 6 Melee Attack, 3 Speed, and 5 Health. These numbers may seem modest at first, but when combined with its five abilities, it becomes clear why many players quickly add it to their list of favorites.

Its first ability is Charge, which in my opinion sets Obsidian Dreadcore apart from most melee monsters. Typically, melee units must be positioned in the front line to attack. With Charge, it can strike from any position. It feels like having a warrior who doesn’t care whether they stand in the back or middle—when their turn comes, their blade still finds its target.
Next is Determined, an ability that feels almost human. Sometimes, even with a well-planned strategy, attacks miss because the opponent is too fast. This ability provides a second chance. Once per round, if its attack misses, Obsidian Dreadcore will attempt to strike the same target again. In a game often decided by a single blow, that second chance can make the difference between victory and defeat.
At higher levels, it gains Demoralise, reducing all enemy monsters’ Melee Attack by 1 from the start of the battle. Then comes Enfeeble, which further reduces the target’s Melee Attack by 1 each time Obsidian Dreadcore successfully hits. This combination feels brutally effective against teams that rely on physical damage—like watching a boxer lose strength round after round before even landing a punch.
Its final ability is Kindred Spirit: Execute, which grants Execute to adjacent Kindred units at the start of battle. This effect requires proper team composition, but when utilized well, enemies with low health are unlikely to get another chance to recover.
However, the most memorable experience I had with this card was when I faced it as an opponent.

In one match, I relied on my long-time favorite, Quora Towershead. Normally, Quora can grow into an unstoppable force over time. I felt confident with my team composition at first, but that confidence gradually turned into confusion.
As soon as the battle began, Demoralise kicked in, reducing Quora’s melee attack. I still believed everything would be fine, as Quora is known for scaling throughout the match.
I was wrong.
Once Obsidian Dreadcore began attacking, Enfeeble steadily chipped away at Quora’s strength. It felt like watching a warrior lose power each round before ever showcasing their full potential. Usually, Quora becomes the centerpiece of pressure against the opponent, but this time it looked like it was being forced to fight with its hands tied.
That’s when I truly understood the power of this card. Obsidian Dreadcore doesn’t just deal significant damage—it suppresses the opponent’s potential before it even has the chance to grow.

My impression of Obsidian Dreadcore is highly positive. With only 5 mana, it offers an exceptional combination of Charge, Determined, Demoralise, Enfeeble, and Kindred Spirit: Execute. If you have this card in your collection, now is the perfect time to start building a Dragon team composition focused on countering melee-heavy formations. In a meta still dominated by physical fighters, Obsidian Dreadcore is not just viable—it has the potential to become a nightmare for anyone who relies too heavily on melee damage.
