Is A’lan Musketeer Worth It? Pros & Cons in Battle

avatar

Hello Splinterlands warriors, how are your battles going this week?
Hopefully you’re winning more often than staring at the screen thinking hard. 😂

While expanding my card collection, I also like to review cards that I find interesting—either because they synergize well with others or because of the unique skills they bring.

This time, I want to talk about a simple yet secretly deadly skill: Double Strike. And the card that made me really understand this skill is one that definitely caught my attention: A’lan Musketeer.

A’lan Musketeer is a Legendary Foundations card that can be played in both Frontier and Modern formats. For someone like me who switches between these modes often, that’s already a big plus.

But what instantly grabbed my attention is just one thing:
Double Strike.

What does that mean?
It attacks twice every round.

Sounds simple, right? But in Splinterlands, one extra attack can be the difference between a quick win… or a slow defeat.

Strength: One Slot, Double Pressure

Anyone who has used this card probably felt like they were “cheating just a little.”

Imagine this:

  • One monster slot
  • One mana cost
  • But it delivers two attacks

It feels like having two monsters in one.

The impact shows in many ways:

  • Enemy armor breaks faster
  • Fragile backline units fall before they can act
  • The tempo of the game becomes much faster

And because it “saves a slot,” you can add more utility monsters—like Cleanse, Repair, or an extra finisher.

Battle Moment: When Double Strike Isn’t Always Easy

Of course, not everything goes smoothly.

This card struggles in battles with the Thick Skinned ruleset.
In this condition, all monsters have Shield, meaning physical damage is reduced by 50%.

That’s when I started thinking:
“Wait… does that make Double Strike only half as effective?”

The opponent’s A’lan still felt annoying. Two attacks per round chip away steadily—like paying off debt little by little.

But I chose not to fight it the same way.

Instead, I used:

  • High-damage monsters (above 3)
  • A mix of magic and melee attacks to break through defenses

The result?
I won the battle, even though A’lan made things pretty tense.

Challenge: Not Every Situation Is Ideal

Interestingly, Double Strike also has its weaknesses:

  • If the enemy has Shield, the damage feels reduced
  • Low base damage makes two hits still insufficient
  • It requires proper positioning and team support

This is where I learned an important lesson:
A good skill still needs the right context.

Closing: Impression & Strategy

For me, A’lan Musketeer is a perfect example of how a single skill can change your playstyle.

My impression:
It’s a “light” card—but with a heavy impact.

Strategies I can share:

  • Use it in high mana cap battles to maximize extra slots
  • Combine it with finishers or damage buffs
  • Avoid relying too much on it in rulesets like Thick Skinned
  • Use it to secure the first kill quickly and control the tempo

In the end, from everything I’ve learned:
sometimes victory isn’t about who hits the hardest… but who hits the most often.

And that’s exactly where Double Strike shines.

See you in the arena. Don’t be surprised if you get hit twice in a single breath. 😄
