Brawl, Merits, and the One Card That Shook

Hello, Splinterlands warriors,
crypto prices are down again—especially BTC. The ripple effects are everywhere, and yeah… HIVE got caught in the draft too. But as always, all we can do is hope things turn around soon. While waiting for the market to turn green again, might as well look for some entertainment that can still get the heart racing: BRAWL and Gladius Cases.

So here’s the story. After joining several Brawls with my guild, I checked the rewards tab and… my merits were only 9,161. Just a little short of the 10K needed to buy a Gladius Case. It felt like standing right in front of the door, but the key was still left at home. I’d been meaning to open cases for days, but it always got postponed with the excuse, “ah, wait one more Brawl.”

This time, though, my patience lost to curiosity.

I ended up heading to Gwen’s Shop, the place where people short on merits look for a morally acceptable shortcut. There, I bought 1,000 merits by trading 1,000 Glints I had. Click, confirm, done. The merits were rounded out—and so was my mood.

Straight to the Guild Shop, and without overthinking it, I bought 5 Gladius Cases. Not one, not two—five. If you’re going to get nervous, might as well go all in.

As for opening them, I’m on team “elegantly lazy.” I chose open multiple. More practical, faster, and honestly the tension feels stronger because you know every fate hangs on a single click. Then I hit flip all and let the cards reveal themselves one by one, like watching a prize lottery draw.

First card: common.
Fourth card: common again.
There were some duplicates, and honestly, that’s not bad news. It’s actually good, because many of my Gladius cards still need BCX to level up. A few rares popped up in between—entertaining enough, but nothing heart-stopping.

Then, on the third card from the end, the card suddenly started shaking.
A signal understood by only one community in the world: “This is it…”

And sure enough.
What appeared was Flagulon Reine.

A legendary card from the Water element.
And what made it even sweeter: I didn’t have this card before. Meaning this wasn’t just an upgrade—it was a completely new addition to my collection.

Flagulon Reine has a skill combo that, in my opinion, is pretty brutal in the right hands. There’s Blast, which makes its magic attack splash onto adjacent targets, and Bloodlust, the fan-favorite skill that makes a monster stronger every time it kills an enemy. In Brawls, a card like this can flip the outcome in a single round.

For newer players, owning a legendary Gladius card like Flagulon Reine isn’t just about style points. It can be a learning tool: learning to read momentum, learning proper placement, and learning that a single card can change an entire team strategy.

As a closing note, if you’re active in a guild, don’t underestimate Brawls. Merits may feel slow to accumulate, but when you finally land a great card, it’s worth it. And if you’re already close to 10K like I was yesterday—well, just buy a little, round it off, and enjoy that heart-pounding moment.

Because in Splinterlands, sometimes what we’re after isn’t just victory… but a good story to tell afterward.
