Anemic & Noxious Fumes: The Battle of Endurance

avatar

Hello Splinterlands warriors,

This time I want to share a battle that, honestly, made my heart race a bit. The rulesets were no joke: Anemic and Noxious Fumes, with a 38 mana cap, and only Life, Death, and Earth elements available. Right from the start, it already felt like this wouldn’t be an ordinary fight.

For those who aren’t too familiar, Anemic limits all monsters to a maximum of just 4 HP. So whether it’s a legendary or a common, everything gets “flattened” like a broke college kid at the end of the month. On top of that, Noxious Fumes applies poison that eats away at every unit each round. What does that mean? It’s not about who’s the strongest—but who can last the longest… or who’s clever enough to find an opening.

I went in with a strategy that was, honestly, a bit reckless but full of hope. My main carry was clearly Quora Towershead, supported by Pelacor Mercenary as a tank with heal. Then I added two martyrs—Venari Marksrat and Fungus Flinger—positioned around Quora. The idea was simple: if they fall, Quora would “level up” through the martyr effect.

At the start of the match, I was still fairly calm. But the moment I saw my opponent’s lineup, I immediately realized… this was going to be a long one.

My opponent brought Xulax Nightwind as a tank—thick void armor, basically a walking wall. From the backline, Silent Sha-vi was quietly stabbing with sneak attacks. And to make things even tougher, their archon was Thaddius Brood, reducing HP and magic attack. In a ruleset where HP is capped at 4, that HP reduction feels like cutting your lifespan in half.

Round 2 was where things started to fall apart. The poison kicked in. One by one, units began to drop. What made me even more cautious was realizing my opponent had immunity units: Harklaw and Ujurak Brave. They just stood there unfazed in the middle of the toxic storm, while my team slowly collapsed.

At that point, I could only hope for one scenario:
“Hopefully the martyr effects trigger before everything is gone.”

And sure enough, they did. Venari Marksrat and Fungus Flinger fell—and the effect was immediate. Quora became stronger, faster, more… alive.

But even then, it wasn’t enough yet.

Going into Round 3, I held my breath. The poison struck again. And in that moment, a bit of good news arrived—my opponent’s Arachne Weaver went down. I allowed myself a small smile. But it vanished instantly when I saw Quora sitting at just 1 HP.

One HP.

If this were a movie, this would be the slow-motion scene.

Luckily, Quora’s heal activated. Her HP went up to 3. And that’s when everything changed. She attacked… and Bloodlust triggered. From that point on, like an engine finally warmed up, she went berserk.

Each kill increased her stats. Each round became more dangerous. But still, the poison didn’t care who you were. I realized I didn’t need full HP—I just needed to survive with 1 HP at the end of each round.

And somehow… that’s exactly what happened.

One by one, the enemies fell. Quora stood alone at the end—exhausted, on the brink of collapse, but still alive. And that victory… didn’t feel like it came from being the smartest player, but from making the right small decisions at the right time.

What makes this battle interesting is how the rulesets can completely flip the value of cards. Under normal conditions, I probably wouldn’t rely so heavily on martyrs. But here? They were the key.

If you ask for my honest opinion, Quora Towershead in this kind of ruleset feels a bit “unfair”… but in a fun way. She’s not just strong—she has incredible comeback potential.

The lesson I took from this?
In extreme conditions, don’t look for the strongest team—look for the one that can survive the longest and keep scaling.

My short advice:
when facing Noxious Fumes, always think long-term—immunity, healing, and scaling are far more valuable than early burst damage.

See you in the next arena.
