Immorality: How It Has Eaten Deep Into The Society

Immorality - What is considered immoral nowadays? Or for religious people, what is considered a sin nowadays? Has social media influenced our morality? Has acceptance and support for topics previously considered incorrect or immoral increased? Is theft, deception, discrimination, hatred, harming other people, etc. being glorified?

On December 23rd 2025, I was in front of my apartment taking fresh air, when 3 young boys, likely to be in their early twenties came into the compound with some plastic seats, some tubers of yam and 2 bottles of exotic wine. Their mission…? “Appreciation” visit to the “prophetess” who supports them in prayer in carrying out their craft(internet fraudster). How did moral values degenerate to this height?

Nowadays there is selective immorality, provided it favours the person involved directly or indirectly. A lot of people now justify immoral acts just because they're benefiting from it. Society does not see one who defrauds the organization where he works as an immoral act, rather they see them as being smart; “one should eat from where one works against all odds”.

In religious settings, some people see none payment of tithe, or irregular attendance of church services as sin but engage in fornication, adultery and embezzlement of church funds. But truth will always stand out, irrespective of how it's being perceived. Any behaviour or actions that goes against established moral principles is what I see as immorality not minding public opinion.

Social media is like a two-edged sword, it has both positive and negative impacts. The smart ones focus on the positive aspect to connect, learn and grow. While the gullible ones get carried away with the fake life flaunted by some for early gratification. And in a bid to follow trends they get involved with different kinds of immortality just to belong. That's the power of social media influence.

Has acceptance and support for topics previously considered incorrect or immoral increased?

Yes, in fact, to a very large extent.
The only thing that remains constant in life is change . But I think it doesn't have to be on the negative side. Nor should it change ethical values. But sadly, majority takes the upper hand even when it is for the wrong reason.

Is theft, deception, discrimination, hatred, harming other people, etc. being glorified?

I could remember vividly when I was in primary school, there was a day my twin brother returned home from school with a ruler he picked from the classroom. The moment he entered the compound with the ruler in his hand, my mom, on seeing it, knowing it didn't belong to him, sent him back immediately. To return it back to wherever he picked it from. He never came home again with what does not belong to him, after that incident.

But today, the story is different from most people. Some parents would laugh over it or give a mere lip scolding. Theft is taken as smartness. Deception is termed as “know your way”. Discrimination, hatred, harming others is being glorified as protecting one's peace or setting boundaries. Thereby, gradually losing empathy.

A lot of things have gone wrong in today's society. The height of moral decadence is alarming which could partly be attributed to the quest for quick gratification. Every immorality is evil and should be seen as what it is regardless of where it's coming from.

Thanks for stopping by! 💚

Some parents would laugh over it or give a mere lip scolding

This is so true! Some parents say things like "they are just kids" and they do not correct them
