Sen. Shevrin Jones (D-Miami Gardens, who is Black) proposed an amendment during Senate committee debate to add or create an option for a George Floyd day of remembrance. He noted that October 14 is also Floyd's birthday and argued that Floyd's death (in 2020) had similarly shifted "public consciousness." Jones criticized Kirk's rhetoric as personally offensive to Black lawmakers and called the bill an example of "selective remembrance." The amendment was rejected.

Rep. Dianne "Ms Dee" Hart-Lowman (D, a Black female legislator) filed or supported an amendment in the House committee (A 950103) that sought to equate or pair recognition of Kirk with Floyd. It was ruled out of order. She and others opposed the core bill, with some calling the honor a "slap in the face" to Black women or communities.

Both of these representatives are out of line and should be held accountable. George Floyd is a violent criminal who committed a home invasion against a Latina. We should not be gloryfing George Floyd at all. Regardless of what you think about Charlie Kirk, George Floyd was truly a horrible person.
