De Oro, A Fresh New Latino Take On Italian-American Mafioso Stories

In addition to the Cor series, I’m working on a side project that I think you all may enjoy.

As a writer, I’m always trying to tell a unique story, but sometimes I find myself wanting to follow classical tropes. Think of a classic mafia thriller. What would you expect from one? Violence, loss of life, drama, and plenty of deceit. Mafia stories are staples in the world of filmmaking and storytelling. Now, what if we added a twist to the traditional Italian-American tale and introduced a more Latin-influenced society?

Better yet, what if we imagined an alternate universe where Spain had populated Florida with more settlers? A history in which large waves of Italian migration primarily occurred in the southern United States. An alternate reality where Caribbean banking influences formed the bedrock of a more Hispanic Florida. A Florida where the city of Orlando doesn’t exist, but instead a smaller, poorer city called Nueva Roma.

A story that follows a young Puerto Rican–Italian protagonist named Marco De Oro as he slowly becomes what he was always meant to be: a member of the Salvatore family.

"De Oro" is my newest novel, a story that offers a fresh perspective on the classic coming-of-age narrative, blending traditional mafioso elements with Latino cartel influences. Set in an alternate Florida shaped by Hispanic banking dynasties and Southern Italian migration, the story explores identity, loyalty, legacy, and the quiet pressures of succession.

Marco is caught between cultures, languages, and moral dilemmas. He grows up surrounded by family, tradition, and unspoken rules—where love and violence often exist in the same room. As he matures, he must decide his future.
