Unrealistic Expectations?

Sometimes I can't shake the feeling that a near-majority of people in this day and age are unhappy with life in one way or another.

Seems like they're always ready to complain about one condition or another, and there's a subtext among many set they somehow deserve better than what they're getting. They somehow feel like they have been short changed by life.

But is that really true?

The more I look at it, the more it seems to me that perhaps the real problem here is that we have developed unrealistic expectations about how good life is "supposed" to get, and what we're "supposed" to get out of it.

Is there something real here, or a culprit of some kind?

Maybe when we look backwards towards a period in human existence maybe 30-40 years ago where so many were being told that they "deserve to have it all," is that where we find the root of the problem?

Maybe the answer here isn't so much that we need life to treat us better and give us more, but we need to be more open to making do with less, and even to lowering our expectations.

That's a suggestion that probably sticks in the craw of many people because we've had it so thoroughly imprinted on our psyches that we should never settle, and that we should always demand the best.

But what if that is not a realisticly sustainable approach? Maybe it simply doesn't make sense that — for example— all these people who are failing to find the life partner they want are looking for proverbial "10's" in a world where the average person is a "5."

People often point to the idea that we "have it much better" than our grandparents, but if that is true why are we complaining so much about our lot in life, and our grandparents seemed quite content with what they had?

What if it is not the world that is out of whack, but our own expectations?

Just something to think about...
