The Fine Art of Not Giving a Damn
In recent years, I've seen a number of books — and even seminars and workshops — on the topic of not giving a damn.
To be honest, sometimes "not giving a damn" is the greatest gift we can give ourselves because we often end up getting far too invested in things we have no control over. And when we're invested in things we have no control over and they don't unfold according to how we hoped they would, we end up spiraling and having meltdowns and whatever else.
Consider, for example, that our native Hive token hit a new all-time low today. Of course, that doesn't seem like it's such an unusual event these days as we've made a number of new all-time lows this year. Today we just happened to make a new one.
I suppose the reaction of many might have been to run around in a circle screaming "The sky's gonna fall, the sky's gonna fall!" but to what end? Unless you have millions of dollars sitting around that you're ready to put at risk, it's beyond your control.
I reflected on that price drop and reminded myself that I really don't give a damn. That is to say I don't really give a damn about the price of Hive, I just give a damn about there being a community here and being able to write these wandering and relatively aimless blog posts. Because I enjoy it, that's why!
To be perfectly honest, living in a part of the world where it virtually costs $100 every time I leave the house, being worried about the price of a token that might reward me with 50 cents at the end of the day doesn't make sense at all. So I don't really worry. But I do worry about the community still being here because I have fun blogging and I've gotten to know some interesting people while here and I'd hate for that to go away.
It is been nine and a half years since I first came upon this strange place and I'm very glad that I did find it! It got me back on the track of blogging — something I'd given up on pretty much around the time Facebook came into the personal publishing market and started to tell people that just a couple of words and an emoji constituted a post and another emoji constituted a response versus actually writing something like we did in the early days of social blogging.
The world seems to be getting dumber all the time and I'm refusing to get dumber with it, which probably makes me somewhat of a dinosaur in today's world. I don't want to hang my hat on dank memes and 10-word shorts and label it "creativity."
Of course not giving a damn is valuable in many aspects of life, however, not just in terms of blogging on Hive.
As far as I'm concerned, most humans I know give far too much of a damn about things they have absolutely no business giving a damn about. Such as other people's opinions and lifestyle choices, religions and so on. As long as they're not infringing on my world they can say and do whatever the hell they want.
It wasn't always so for me... when I was young and idealistic I thought I could change the world. But of course that is just an illusion. Just like it's an illusion to think that we have any control, let alone the kind of control needed to change the world, on a large scale.
