Anger, Organization and Time Management

Ask someone how good they are at managing their time, and you'll likely get a unique and different response from every person you talk to!

I have my own bad habits... one of which is the (false!) belief that if I am just a little better organized, I'm going to get more things done in a timely fashion.

Many years ago, I remember regularly pursuing this theory by heading to the nearest bookstore and buying myself a brand new journal, in the belief that "keeping notes" in a fresh new book, dedicated purely to whatever endeavor I was trying to get better at, would magically make me more efficient.

Which, of course, it never did!

As I might have mentioned previously, I am actyally far better at designing organizational systems than I am at following them.

Bottom line: Claiming to be "badly organized" is merely an excuse and rationalization to cover up the deeper issue of not feeling very motivated. Pretty much ever.

Earlier today, I ended up "reorganizing" part of my home office, for the umpteenth time.

In this particular instance, I was motivated by my irritation at how long it was taking me to gather up the various components needed to fill an order originating from one of my eBay stores.

I realized — in mid-stream — that I was getting really angry with the process, so I paused for a moment of deeper self-inquiry to truly understand why.

In this case, there was actually an authentic reason to want to re-organize. The difference beeing that it wasn't to save time, it was to save myself from frustration.

What was also different about this iteration of office shuffling was the fact that the changes I made were actually informed by eight years of actual usage of the space, and having a better understanding of what I really need to get things done, effectively.

Historically, I do (disturbingly) many things because I get bored with what I actually need to be doing and am actually seeking a distraction... but I label it as the needed to be better organized.

When that happens "better organization" is more of a concept than an actual need.

What's ironic, after I had finished moving a few things around, and relabeling and relocating some boxes and bins, my office looked almost NO different! On previous (useless or cosmetic) reorganizations, the visuals have typically been somewhat impressive, but the effect has been minimal.

Some part of me was actually happy to notice that... because it hinted at the fact that I was probably pretty close to perfect already, and all that was really needed was some minor tweaking of my system to reflect what I need to do today vs. what I needed to do nine years ago.

Now it'll be interesting to see whether my productivity actually improves. Well... not exactly. But whether the amount of time I spend on certain tasks improves.

At the end of it all, I couldn't help but feel slightly amused at the fact that I am likely a harder taskmaster with myself than I would ever be if I were working in a public outside workplace!

Thanks for coming for a visit, and have a wonderful remainder of your week!

I’m excellent at this. I’m planning to write a book called “Useless Habits” a parody of James Clear’s book, “Atomic Habits”

I’ve got various digital systems in place where I squirrel away ideas and things I should be doing of which many never see completion. I swear I’m getting worse!
