Aaah I do love this time of year so many festivities!! Its Halloween, Then Guy Fawkes and before you know it the kids are on holiday and you're Christmas shopping and then popping bubbly for the new year! Where the heck has the year gone btw? Guy Fawkes used to be massive here, but thanks to some absolute morons setting fire to our mountains and wildlife reserves, as well as general concern for the affect on domestic animals, the law comes down pretty hard on anyone letting off unlicensed fireworks.

I do understand, really, as an animal lover...

But it also makes me so sad. Some of my fondest memories as a child was being held by my mother with my feet in her pockets, watching the fireworks together. And one of the only good childhood memories I have of my dad was him setting off various fireworks in our back yard, including a Catherine wheel! The authorities to seem to turn a bit of a blind eye to the beach here in Table View which is a literal hot spot for fireworks and probably the only place left where the public can let off their own fireworks.

I guess the cops figure it's better and safer to allow people to do this and bend the rules in an environment that is very safe, with lots of sand and a giant ocean, rather than letting them off in their back yards or other unsafe areas.

Getting TO the beachfront on Guy Fawkes is another story though. The traffic gets so backed up that you can't really even get there. Unless you camp out there all day.

Sigh... how times have changed... but we still celebrate what we can, right?

The year really has flown by! I am glad it is not just me.

As a kid we used to have a blast, halloween was carving turnips to make jack o lanterns, then all the games like dookin for apples etc, then guy fawkes and penny for a guy, then like you say the garden bonfire at home. The fireworks and the catherine wheels were awesome. We used to have well done proper sausages cooked on the fire too!

People still have fireworks but it is more the bigger displays. I am with you on animals, which is why I get pissed off at New Year, fireworks should be once a year at Bonfire night only. That way animal carers know when to watch out for their pets.

Traditions are dying out here it is sad. Times really have changed and I will stop before I go on a rant 🤣

I hope you are enjoying the job!
