Finding What I'd Forgotten

Lately, I've been busy with work, kids, and chores. When I'm not involved with those, I'm usually trying to relax and play games on my phone, working on a post for Hive, or working on some aspect of the DUO project. With all the business of life, I tend to get lost in the hustle of it all. Sometimes, it takes just a simple moment to trigger memories of simpler times I hadn't reminisced about in years.

What started as a typical Saturday last weekend ended up creating some fun memories with my kids. The morning started in typical fashion: I get my breakfast and make my coffee while my oldest son plays some games on his tablet, and my youngest son watches cartoons. This lets my wife sleep in longer. As soon as she's up, the TV and tablet typically go off an hour later. For the boys, it's harder to disconnect after having a few hours of "screen time."

Once "screen time" is over, we play with the kids, get games out, read books, and let them play on their bikes and scooters outside. This time around, they didn't want to do any of that. A random thought occured: let's build a fort! The boys were curious, so I grabbed some chairs, pillows, and blankets, and off we went!

It wasn't anything fancy, but the boys were thrilled! A huge, new space to call their own, and mom and dad weren't allowed inside!

The dog couldn't get in either, so they had their snacks and drinks inside with them.

The boys behaved well, so we even let them eat their lunch in the fort. They loved every minute of it!

I loved it, too. In fact, it took me back to the memories I had as a kid and even as a teen. I'd build a fort in my room using chairs, tables, my bed, pillows and blankets, and draw, play Pokémon, think of fun ideas to do with my friends later in the day, etc.

I hadn't thought about those days in a while. I had a lot of fun as a kid, and now my boys were enjoying their childhood, and I get to be part of it. It reminded me to appreciate the simpler times because "adulting" can be stressful and hard. I think all of us can sometimes forget and lose our sense of fun, wonder, and excitement. Sometimes, it takes a moment of childish wonder and excitement to help us remember and bring us back.
