Childhood Geography, Climate and Wellness

One of the things that has consistently held true for me over the years, is that I really don't do well when it's hot.

When the temperature rises much above 76° — that's about 25°C for you metric folks — I start feeling sluggish and I start slowing right down and most unpleasantly of all I start sweating profusely.

I say this and there's something somewhat ironic about the fact that I lived in South Central Texas for almost 25 years... a part of the world where temperatures well in excess of 100° (or 40°C) are pretty common on almost every afternoon between June and september.

Although I am not going to linger on trying to explain that part of my existence, suffice it to say that I perhaps took the old saying "Bloom where you are planted" to heart a little bit too much, eventually agreeing to be climatologically challenged for 25 years!

Being born and raised in Denmark, winters were cool but not seriously freezing, and summers were temperate but seldom extraordinarily hot.

That's one of the things that I appreciate about living here in the Pacific Northwest and it was also a major reason for me to move here in the first place, some 20 years ago. I just don't do well with hot weather.

I was reminded of that this past weekend when the temperatures around here crept up in the region of 82-83° for a couple of days. I started feeling really miserable... really quickly, and particularly while sleeping.

Of course one of the "features" of living in a part of the world where it rarely gets very hot is that most of our houses here were built to keep in high heat rather than to vent it out when it gets hot... so trying to get any kind of cross breeze going to ventilate the house is extremely difficult. It also makes sleeping difficult when it's hot inside.

The "original" irony is that I was born to parents who were basically sun chasers and who were always looking to go to the next tropical destination for holidays.

And so, we'd pack up our stuff and head to destinations such as the West Indies or even East Africa, and I'd spend the entire time we were there being thoroughly miserable, often sitting with a wet towel around my neck to keep myself from boiling over.

Did I mention that the whole practice of so-called "laying out on the beach when it is sunny and warm is an activity that is completely wasted on me?

Thankfully it has cooled down again and I'm grateful! With a bit of luck, we might get through the rest of the summer without further toastiness.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great remainder of your week!

Too much hot weather is difficult to go out and do things outside. I can't breath well also in the heat.
