Zoolander Is One Of The Funniest And Most Ridiculous Comedies Of The 2000s. Ben Stiller’s 2001 Classic Takes Aim At The Fashion Industry, Celebrity Culture And Real Conspiracies With Completely Outrageous Comedy That Somehow Still Has A Few Real Ideas Hidden Underneath It.

Zoolander is one of those movies that is so completely ridiculous that it should not work as well as it does. Ben Stiller takes the world of fashion, celebrity culture and political conspiracy theories and turns all of it into a ridiculous comedy filled with bizarre characters, memorable lines and some truly stupid moments that are still hilarious.

Ben Stiller stars as Derek Zoolander, one of the biggest male models in the world. Derek is extremely confident in his modeling abilities, especially his signature facial expression called Blue Steel, but he is also incredibly clueless about almost everything happening around him.

The story gets started when Derek loses the Male Model of the Year award to Hansel, played by Owen Wilson. Hansel is everything Derek thinks he is supposed to be, and their rivalry eventually turns into an unlikely friendship. Wilson is perfect as Hansel because he plays the character with the same ridiculous confidence while giving him his own completely strange personality.

The cast is loaded with great performances. Will Ferrell plays the fashion designer Jacobim Mugatu, and he is absolutely insane in the role. Christine Taylor plays Matilda Jeffries, a journalist who becomes involved with Derek, while Jerry Stiller plays Derek’s father Maury. The movie also has an incredible number of celebrity cameos that make it even more fun to watch.

Ben Stiller also directed the movie, and he clearly understood that the best way to make Zoolander work was to never take the premise seriously. Everything is exaggerated, from the fashion world to Derek’s intelligence to the absurd conspiracy at the center of the story.

The basic plot involves Derek being manipulated into becoming an assassin. A group of powerful people wants to use him to assassinate the Malaysian Prime Minister, and they discover that Derek can be programmed to carry out the mission. Derek has absolutely no idea what is really happening, which makes the entire situation even more ridiculous.

This is where the movie introduces its goofy version of mind control. Derek is essentially conditioned through a trigger and certain instructions, turning him into an unwitting weapon. It is obviously played for extreme comedy, but there is a real historical idea underneath the joke.

The real CIA program was MKUltra, which was an actual secret program that involved research into behavioral modification, interrogation and the effects of drugs and other techniques. The program became publicly known through government investigations and congressional hearings in the 1970s, after many records had already been destroyed.

Zoolander obviously takes that history and turns it into complete Hollywood insanity. The movie is not a serious depiction of MKUltra, and it would be a mistake to treat the fictional mind control plot as evidence that the specific events in Zoolander actually happened. What makes the joke interesting is that the filmmakers were playing with a real and very strange chapter of American history that had already been publicly exposed.

That contrast is one of the reasons the comedy works. Zoolander can make fun of something as ridiculous as a male model being programmed to assassinate a world leader while also reminding the audience that government experiments involving behavioral control were not simply invented by Hollywood. The movie takes a real historical subject and pushes it into completely absurd territory.

The fashion industry is another obvious target. Derek and Hansel are surrounded by people who take themselves incredibly seriously, even though much of what they are doing looks completely ridiculous from the outside. The movie exaggerates that world, but there is a real satire underneath the jokes about celebrity culture, vanity and people becoming famous for almost nothing.

There are so many memorable moments throughout Zoolander, from Blue Steel and Magnum to the ridiculous fashion shows and Derek’s attempt to understand what is actually happening around him. The comedy is intentionally stupid, but there is a lot of clever writing hiding inside that stupidity.

For me, that is why Zoolander has remained such a great comedy. It does not pretend to be smarter than it is, but there are plenty of smart ideas underneath the ridiculousness. Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell are perfectly matched, and the movie knows exactly how far it can push its absurd premise.

Zoolander has become a true comedy classic because it is endlessly quotable, completely ridiculous and surprisingly easy to rewatch. It makes fun of fashion, celebrity culture, politics and even some very real pieces of American history, all while telling an intentionally stupid story about a male model named Derek Zoolander. Sometimes a movie does not need to be serious to have something interesting to say, and Zoolander proves that pretty well.
