Brandon Lee stars as Eric Draven, a musician who is murdered along with his fiancée, Shelly Webster, played by Sofia Shinas. One year after their deaths, Eric mysteriously returns from the grave with the help of a supernatural crow. He has been given one purpose, to find the people responsible and make sure they pay for what they did.

That sounds like a straightforward revenge story, but The Crow has much more going on underneath it. Eric isn’t simply an angry guy looking for revenge. He is a man who lost the person he loved and has been given one final opportunity to bring some kind of justice to what happened.

Brandon Lee is absolutely fantastic in the movie. He gives Eric a strange combination of sadness, humor, anger and intensity, and he never lets the character become just another comic book hero. There is always a sense that Eric is still grieving, even when he’s stalking through the darkness taking down the people responsible for his death.

The supporting cast is excellent as well. Michael Wincott plays Top Dollar, the crime boss behind the murders, and he brings an incredible presence to the role. Wincott has one of those voices that immediately makes a character sound dangerous, and Top Dollar feels like exactly the kind of villain Eric needs to face.

Rochelle Davis plays Sarah, a young girl who was close to Eric and Shelly before their deaths, while Ernie Hudson plays Sergeant Albrecht. Both characters are important because they give Eric connections to the living world. Sarah in particular helps remind us that Eric’s return isn’t just about revenge. There are still people he cares about who are alive.

Alex Proyas did an amazing job bringing the world of The Crow to the screen. The city is almost always dark, wet and covered in shadows, with huge gothic buildings towering over the streets. It looks less like a normal American city and more like a graphic novel that somehow became real.

The movie was based on James O’Barr’s comic book, and you can really feel that influence. The compositions, costumes, makeup and production design all have an exaggerated quality that works perfectly with the story. The Crow doesn’t look like most superhero movies, and that’s one of its greatest strengths.

The soundtrack is another huge part of the movie’s identity. Featuring artists including The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Stone Temple Pilots and Joy Division, the music fits the dark alternative atmosphere perfectly. It’s one of those soundtracks where the songs don’t just play in the background. They feel like another character in the movie.

The tragedy surrounding the production also makes The Crow difficult to discuss. Brandon Lee was accidentally killed by a prop gun during filming, just days before production was scheduled to finish. He was only 28 years old, and knowing that while watching his performance inevitably adds another layer of sadness to the film.

But I don’t think The Crow should only be remembered because of the tragedy. Brandon Lee deserves to be remembered for how good he actually was in this movie. He had enormous screen presence, and The Crow makes it painfully obvious that he had a lot more to give as an actor.

One of the things I like most about the story is that revenge doesn’t magically fix everything. Eric can punish the people responsible, but he can’t bring Shelly back or restore the life they were supposed to have together. His journey is ultimately about accepting what happened and finding a way to finally move on.

The film also knows exactly what kind of movie it wants to be. It doesn’t try to lighten everything up or turn Eric into a traditional superhero. There is humor here, but the overall story remains dark, violent and tragic. That commitment to its tone is a big reason the movie has held up so well.

The Crow became a major cult classic because it brought together things that weren’t usually combined in this way. Gothic horror, comic books, romance, revenge, alternative music and supernatural elements all exist together without the movie feeling like it’s trying too hard.

That’s why I think The Crow is such a good film. It has an incredible visual style, a fantastic soundtrack, a great supporting cast and one of Brandon Lee’s best performances. Most importantly, there is real emotion underneath all the violence and supernatural elements.

The Crow is ultimately a story about love, loss, revenge and letting go. It’s a dark movie, but there is something strangely beautiful about it too.
