Planes Trains and Automobiles Is One of the Greatest Comedies Ever Made. A Perfect Blend of Humor, Heart, and Unforgettable Performances.

Released in 1987, Planes Trains and Automobiles stands as one of the most beloved comedies of the eighties. On the surface it looks like a simple road trip movie, but it turns into something much deeper. It is funny, frustrating, emotional, and incredibly real all at the same time.

The film was written and directed by John Hughes, who had an incredible run during the decade. Hughes understood characters better than most, and this film is a perfect example of that. He takes a basic premise and turns it into a story that feels personal and relatable.

Steve Martin stars as Neal Page, a tightly wound marketing executive just trying to get home to Chicago in time for Thanksgiving. Martin plays the role perfectly, capturing the stress, frustration, and exhaustion that builds as everything starts to go wrong.

John Candy plays Del Griffith, a traveling shower curtain ring salesman who becomes Neal’s unexpected travel companion. Candy delivers one of the best performances of his career here. Del is talkative, annoying, but also kind and genuine. Candy brings warmth to the role that makes the character unforgettable.

The chemistry between Martin and Candy is what drives the entire film. Neal and Del are complete opposites, and that clash creates some of the funniest moments in the movie. At the same time, their relationship slowly evolves into something meaningful.

The plot follows their chaotic journey as they try to get from New York to Chicago. Flights are canceled, trains break down, cars are destroyed, and nothing goes according to plan. Each setback adds another layer of frustration and comedy.

What makes the film stand out is how real the situations feel. Anyone who has ever dealt with travel problems can relate to Neal’s growing irritation. At the same time, Del’s constant optimism creates a balance that keeps the film from becoming too negative.

John Hughes does an excellent job blending comedy with emotion. The movie is filled with hilarious scenes, but it also knows when to slow down and let the characters breathe. That balance is what makes the story stick with you.

There are several iconic moments that fans still talk about. The car rental scene with Steve Martin is legendary. His frustration reaches a boiling point in a way that is both hilarious and completely understandable.

The film also builds toward one of the most emotional endings in any comedy. As Neal finally reaches home, he realizes something important about Del. That realization changes everything and gives the film a powerful final act.

John Candy’s performance in those final moments adds depth to the entire movie. What started as a comedy about an annoying travel partner becomes something much more meaningful.

Visually, the film keeps things simple, focusing on the characters and their journey. The settings change constantly, but the heart of the story remains the same.

Planes Trains and Automobiles continues to hold up because it is built on strong characters and honest emotion. The humor still works, and the story still connects.

It is not just a funny movie. It is a great movie. One that delivers laughs while also reminding you about kindness, patience, and understanding.

OMG! I just watched that movie last night and I loved it! The humor is still working great, though it is almost 4 decades old. And John Candy is such a great actor RIP. 👏🏻
