Gladiator is one of those movies that feels like a massive event from the moment it starts. Released in 2000 and directed by Ridley Scott, the movie brought the sword and sandal epic back in a huge way and became one of the most memorable films of its era.
Russell Crowe stars as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a respected Roman general who has spent years fighting for Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Maximus isn’t interested in political power. He wants to return home to his wife and son, but everything changes when Marcus Aurelius dies and his jealous son Commodus takes control.
Joaquin Phoenix gives an incredible performance as Commodus. He is arrogant, insecure, jealous and completely obsessed with gaining his father’s approval. Phoenix makes him more than just a typical movie villain because there is a twisted vulnerability underneath his cruelty. He wants to be loved and respected, but his need for power destroys almost everything around him.
After Commodus orders the execution of Maximus and his family is murdered, Maximus is left with nothing. He is eventually captured and sold into slavery, where he becomes a gladiator. The man who once commanded entire Roman armies is suddenly fighting for his life in front of cheering crowds.
That transformation is what makes the story so powerful. Maximus isn’t fighting because he wants fame or fortune. He is fighting because he has been stripped of everything and wants revenge against the man responsible. His journey from general to slave to legendary gladiator gives the movie a classic revenge story at its center.
The cast is fantastic beyond Crowe and Phoenix. Connie Nielsen plays Lucilla, Commodus’ sister and someone who has a complicated history with Maximus. Oliver Reed plays Proximo, the former gladiator who becomes Maximus’ owner and mentor. Djimon Hounsou plays Juba, another gladiator who becomes one of Maximus’ closest friends.
Russell Crowe is the heart of the movie, though. He gives Maximus an incredible sense of strength without making him seem invincible. You believe this is a man who has spent his life fighting, but you also see the grief behind his eyes. Crowe won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the performance, and it’s easy to understand why.
Ridley Scott’s direction is another major reason Gladiator works so well. He creates a massive version of ancient Rome filled with enormous sets, huge crowds, spectacular battles and incredible attention to detail. The Colosseum sequences especially feel like you’re watching history come alive, even though the movie takes plenty of liberties with actual history.
The action is also fantastic. The opening battle against the Germanic tribes immediately establishes Maximus as a brilliant military commander, while the gladiator fights give us a completely different kind of combat. The violence is brutal, but it always feels connected to the story rather than being there simply for spectacle.
The movie also looks incredible. Scott uses shadows, smoke, fire and enormous sets to create a world that feels both beautiful and brutal. Hans Zimmer’s score adds another huge emotional element, especially during the quieter scenes involving Maximus thinking about his family and the life he lost.
One of the things I love about Gladiator is that it understands the importance of the audience. The Romans aren’t simply watching gladiators fight because they’re bored. The games are entertainment, politics and propaganda all at once. Commodus understands that if he can control the crowd, he can control the city.
There are also some genuinely funny moments throughout the movie, although Gladiator is obviously not a comedy. Proximo has several great lines, and there is a certain dark humor in watching Maximus become increasingly irritated with the ridiculous politics surrounding him. The comedy works because it gives the movie occasional breathing room without destroying the serious tone.
The relationship between Maximus and Juba is another great part of the story. Both men have lost their families, and both are fighting in an environment where their lives have been taken away from them. Their friendship gives Maximus something to fight for beyond revenge.
What makes Gladiator such a good movie is that underneath all the battles and spectacle, it is really about character. Maximus is given every reason to become completely consumed by hatred, but he continues to hold onto his sense of honor. He doesn’t want to become like Commodus.
The final confrontation between Maximus and Commodus is the natural conclusion to everything that came before it. It isn’t just two characters fighting. It’s the collision between two completely different ideas of power. Commodus believes power comes from controlling people, while Maximus earns the loyalty of others through his actions.
Gladiator won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor, and it deserved the recognition. It successfully combined the scale of an epic with the emotional core of a revenge story. The performances are excellent, the action is spectacular and the filmmaking still looks impressive more than 25 years later.
