I Finally Stopped Being Gearnut’s Punching Bag

Greetings, Splinterlands players!
Today, I want to share a battle that literally made me shout “finaaally!” after being a victim so many times. And my opponent? Not some random weakling. Today, I finally managed to take down Dar “Gottem” Gearnut, the living fortress who has smashed me to pieces more times than I can count.

Why Was This Battle Special?

My encounters with Dar “Gottem” Gearnut aren’t new—and honestly, I usually lose. This monster is no joke.

  • Legendary card
  • Dual element (Life & Dragon)
  • High HP, high mana, and brutal defensive abilities
  • Exclusive event card priced at 1050 Vouchers

In short, he’s like a “mini final boss” in ranked matches.

Ruleset & Battle Setup

  • Mana cap: 36
  • All elements except Water and Dragon

This means no Dragon element to bypass formation weaknesses. But the opponent could still use Dar ‘Gottem’ Gearnut because he’s dual-splinter Life–Dragon, and the summoner they used was Archon.

My Lineup

Summoner: Reklah
— Debuffs two enemy monsters with -2 HP, which became the key to winning this match.

My units:

  • Ujurak Brave
  • Dark Arborist
  • Chaos Jailer
  • Broken Earth Thug
  • Arachne Weaver
  • Kelan Gaines

My formation was filled with low-mana monsters. Why? Because under this ruleset and mana cap, the number of attacks is often more effective than one or two big monsters.

My strategy:

  • Bring melee & magic debuffs
  • Include poison, cripple, and ambush
  • Utilize multiple units for sustained pressure
  • Target the opponent’s support monsters first

Opponent’s Team

Summoner: Chuul Jujinchi

Enemy units:

  • Dar ‘Gottem’ Gearnut (main tank, obviously)
  • Virid Venomance (provides Shield to Gearnut)
  • Janni Rebel (additional damage from the backline)
  • Meriput Magician (healing & sustain)

The opponent clearly went for a “fortress defense” style: a super thick tank in front, supported by heal and shield from the back—classic, and often annoying.

How the Battle Played Out

Right from the start, I opened with an unusual move:
My Reklah reduced the HP of two enemy units — Meriput Magician and Virid Venomance.

And the impact was immediate. Those two became prime targets for my Opportunity attackers. Chaos Jailer jumped in with Ambush, and suddenly the opponent’s support line went into panic mode.

Virid Venomance fell first, which meant Dar ‘Gottem’ Gearnut lost access to the bonus Shield aura.
Then Meriput Magician followed, leaving the steel fortress with no healing.

Even after losing its backbone, Dar ‘Gottem’ Gearnut still stood tall—and still looked scary. With high HP, armor, and innate Shield, he remained difficult for my melee attackers to break through.

But here’s where the fun combo started working:

  • Poison slowly but steadily chipped away
  • Magic damage ignored his armor
  • Cripple gradually reduced his max HP
  • The sheer number of low-mana attacks kept pushing him back

Gearnut staggered like a giant slowly succumbing to a relentless storm. And in the final round…
The fortress finally crumbled.

I couldn’t help but smile. It felt like settling an old score.

Important Lessons for New Players

Countering Dar ‘Gottem’ Gearnut isn’t about brute-forcing through his massive HP and armor. The real key is:

  1. Take out the support first.
Without external heal and shield, Gearnut becomes much more manageable.

  2. HP debuffs are incredibly strong.
Reklah was the MVP of this match.

  3. Don’t hesitate to use low-mana monsters.
More attacks often outperform one big unit.

  4. Poison + Magic + Cripple is a deadly trio.
Perfect for melting down super bulky tanks.

Conclusion

This victory wasn’t just about defeating Dar ‘Gottem’ Gearnut. It was proof that smart strategy, good reading of lineups, and skill timing can take down even exclusive legendary cards.

My quick advice:

  • Learn debuff and support mechanics
  • Don’t be afraid of small monsters
  • And of course… keep collecting Glint and Merits
Because the more soulbound and Gladius cards you obtain, the wider your strategic options become.

Hope this story inspires your next victory. See you in the arena!
