And your point about reading before publishing, engaging or up voting is spot on. I've come across users who got into some trouble cos of their comments. Like we'd say here "if you don't have any meaningful thing to say, just waka pass or better still, mind your business." This would really prevent you from stories that touch.

Yes, my mother told me from an early age, if we don't have anything meaningful to say, although she phrased it as anything positive to say, then don't say anything!
