One thing I find fascinating about Hive is how different it is from other social media platforms. We earn income directly from the community, not from advertisements. This highlights the crucial role the community plays within the Hive ecosystem.
However, the question arises: What happens after the 7-day payout period ends?
Your posts can certainly still receive comments from others. Take the post I’ve pinned to my profile, for example; even though it was published two months ago, it still attracts comments to this day.

It is entirely possible for a post to continue finding readers months—or even a year or two—later, provided it remains relevant and inspiring. Financially, however, its active earning journey has concluded.

I Wasn't Expecting to Earn Just by Doing Simple Things
A few days ago, I visited 3speak.tv to watch some videos. I watched a few interesting ones, but then something caught my attention: an advertisement appeared within one of the videos I was watching.
I’m not sure how long ads have been present on 3speak videos, but I certainly noticed them on several of the videos I watched that day.
A few days later, a notification popped up.
I received 0.038 HIVE in my wallet with the memo: "3speak ad revenue share (viewer)."
So, I received a share of the revenue from the ads I watched while viewing videos on 3speak. I noticed that these ads don't just appear when viewing a post directly on 3speak; it seems they also show up across various frontends whenever a post contains a video.
The Revenue Is Shared in a Very Hive Way

I find this really interesting. The revenue-sharing model is clearly laid out: 50-40-10.
50% goes to the creator, 40% to 3speak, and the remaining 10% to the viewers.
What’s even more interesting is that, as a creator, you can choose whether to share the ad revenue you earn with the community where you made the post.
So, everyone has a chance to earn rewards through this program. It’s not just the creators who are valued; viewers get a share, too. You know, that is so "Hive."

Why This Feels Bigger Than Another Feature
We have long known that the payout period for content on Hive is seven days. This program breathes new life into video content on Hive, extending its financial lifespan. Even older videos—created before the 3speak advertising program—can continue to generate income as long as they attract viewers.
Now, creators on Hive have a compelling reason to produce evergreen content.
Imagine creating videos on topics like Hive tutorials, Splinterlands guides, photography tips, gardening tips, and so on. You can continue to earn revenue as long as your videos attract viewers on 3speak.tv, because this type of content remains relevant for years to come.
This Could Change How I Think About Making Videos
Lately, I’ve been posting videos alongside my Hive posts—whether for long-form articles or short updates on Waves. Even though I upload them directly via Ecency, they automatically appear on my 3Speak account as well.
I got some views when I first uploaded them, though it seems they aren't attracting new viewers anymore. Back then, my only income came from upvotes, and that revenue stream stopped after seven days.
Now, I realize that these videos remain valuable assets. They might still attract viewers in the future and become a new source of income, much like on YouTube. On YouTube, even a video from ten years ago can still generate revenue today.
The difference, however, is that on 3Speak, you can start earning income almost immediately after uploading. This contrasts with YouTube, which has strict requirements for joining its monetization program.
On YouTube, only creators earn money; here, however, you can earn income simply by watching the videos you enjoy on 3Speak.
Closing
Maybe it's still too early to know how significant this program will become. Maybe the ad revenue won't replace curation rewards. But for the first time, I'm looking at my old videos differently.
They're no longer just posts that had their seven days of attention. They might become digital assets that continue working long after I published them.

Advertisement revenue is always the best part of all social media economy. The original idea from #steem previously to incorporate advertisements on the blog posts, is to tokenized revenue stream between advertisers and Blockchain consumers. That way, the tokenomy can spin to a higher level of currency system.
Imagine, whatever you earned today, are still referring to $. Whatever you earned from Hive, you will have to convert it into dollars, and subsequently change back to IDR before you can spend them in your own country.
By tokenized an ad, we are channeling live revenue stream with actual "value". Supposed one day when this widely adopted by the actual tokenomy, advertiser is advertising their product with Hive. When hive user decided to spend, they use their hive to pay for the product. Well, that's the best case scenario. But the seller have no other way to spend their hive, they will have to change it back to $, hence this value transfer become incomplete, instead it became risk transfer.
While there is still plenty of debate regarding advertisements on Hive, this could at least serve as a first step toward generating income beyond just upvotes.
I’ve read several posts about creating evergreen content by applying SEO strategies. However, if rewards are only earned during the first seven days, I feel the effort involved isn't commensurate with the return. (I’m actually not even sure if Hive posts get indexed by search engines.)

Awesome post! You clearly share the same enthusiasm for this feature as I do. This can be huge. As video creators, we should think about shifting our content strategy toward evergreen and more engaging videos.
I really hope 3speak will not turn into a MrBeast-style platform. But let's be honest, his videos are the most engaging ones on the internet right now. So maybe some of us should learn a few lessons from it. How to build a good story arc. How to keep the viewer watching until the end.
Viewer rewards are only one part of it. The biggest share goes to the creators. And it could bring new people to Hive in general.
The one big thing we still have to solve is onboarding advertisers, or getting Hive projects to advertise. Right now is the best moment to start. New advertisers who book their first campaign now get a 50% discount that runs for a whole year.

Yes, I’m really enthusiastic about this program. I hope it can attract plenty of advertisers to Hive.
Of course, to draw in advertisers from outside Hive, we first need to prove we’re ready—whether that’s through content quality or by generating high viewership for videos on 3Speak.
I completely agree that we should learn a lot from major YouTube channels—studying how they create content and figuring out how to adapt those methods to suit the Hive community.
Alternatively, we could invite active YouTubers to consider 3Speak as a promising video-sharing platform.
I started uploading my youtube content to three speak yesterday. I think this might be a huge step for the whole hive ecosystem if the advertisment works technically stable. I am even thinking of promoting my youtube channel at some point as an advitisor, because I think tibfox said you can already run ads for 10 HBD
Yeah, it looks like I’ll be uploading videos to 3speak more frequently too. I might even create a new account specifically for that.
Unfortunately, I deleted the videos from my hard drive after YouTube removed my channel late last January—exactly two days before my first payout of over $700. 😭

Politics is one of the niches that draws a large audience on YouTube, provided the content is packaged well.
It seems the RPM for geopolitics is high, too; I once read about a channel that managed to earn a substantial amount from just a single video, even with a relatively small number of viewers.
I kinda struggle putting decent audio recordings into a video, also I def need a script if I wanna discuss the topic. I honestly have most of my politcs as articles on hive and just started uploading political videos and most of it are AI songs.
Of course, you can ask ChatGPT to create a script tailored to your preferences, and then turn it into a voiceover using either a real voice recording or a text-to-speech tool like ElevenLabs.
You know, I hate ads! Ads in videos, ads in games, ads everywhere! I mentioned it to my Dev for slothbuzz.com about adding ads a while back, and he was likewise disgusted, but there are probably more reasons to have them than not...
So, I get why platforms do it; it generates revenue that wouldn't normally exist. Sharing a portion with viewers is a great way to sweeten the deal. And like you say, moving towards a more 'evergreen' reward system brings new avenues for progress. If we're ever going to get out of the hive bubble and make a dent in Web2 dominance, we need more revenue generated from outside sources!
I hope 3speak continues to buzz with their plan of action; let's see how it affects the quality and quantity of Videos hitting Hive (all the better for the slothbuzz.com video and video shorts sections! Who knows, if we eventually add ads, maybe we can figure out a similar system!)
Yes, advertisements can certainly be annoying, especially when you're engrossed in watching a video. However, many platforms have proven that they can keep running thanks to ad revenue.
I also hope this program will improve video quality on 3Speak, thereby increasing watch time and visitor numbers. In my opinion, this is the key to attracting advertisers from outside the Hive ecosystem.
Things are still in the early stages at 3Speak, but with community support, it will surely improve over time.

Having an additional window for earning money from content is a huge motivational factor for creators to make evergreen content! That wasn't the case with 7-day upvotes, and this could be a real game-changer...
Also, this could motivate others to follow 3SPeak's steps and implement other revenue models in their frontends, communities, etc. Let's see how it goes...

Yes, this will certainly be a real game-changer on Hive. Evergreen content and SEO strategies become less attractive when the effort involved isn't commensurate with the revenue earned within just a seven-day window; the situation changes, however, when there is an opportunity to generate ad revenue beyond that initial period.
If 3Speak succeeds with this advertising program, I believe various front-ends should consider leveraging ad revenue to cover the costs of maintaining their platforms.
Of course, with ad placement kept to a reasonable level so as not to be intrusive.
