Short Term Memory...

It is about midnight, and I don't remember what I did today!

Sure, I can sort of piece together what I did today but I don't have any direct memory or recollection of what I actually did today even though I know what I did today.

Perhaps that is excessive nuance, but it still bothers me and it just underscores something that I have known for most of my adult life: namely that my short-term memory really sucks.

It's pretty much an across the spectrum thing, not just limited to not being able to remember my grocery list (which I've never been able to) but also including events and activities participated in.

While I have had concerns that it is potentially early onset dementia or something more serious, the couple of tests I have been subjected to by actual medical professionals suggest that there is nothing wrong with my brain. I just have a shitty short term memory!

I wish I didn't, because much of the time it leaves me feeling like a bit of an idiot.

What good is it to go see a movie and subsequently not really feel good about discussing it with the people you went to the movie with because you forgotten most of what it was about.

Of course if you come back and ask me after a couple of months I can tell you pretty much everything about that movie including which movie theater it was, what the weather was like, and what clothes I was wearing.

It all goes to show that the human brain is a really weird place and we don't really have a great understanding of it, no matter what science might say to the contrary.

The challenge across the past 40 years has been that a poor short-term memory is often an "occupational hazard." While it has nothing to do with intelligence or a person's capabilities, it tends to be an automatic disqualifier. It have experienced it many times, personally speaking.

Ironically, one of my specialty niche businesses requires me to know a lot of esoteric references, and my profits depend on my remembering tiny variations others might overlook or not be awa %re of. And I am one of the most knowledgeable in my niche market. But it depends on long term memory.

Maybe I'm too old to continue trying to learn about this, but for now I'm going to keep learning and hope to find a few "clues" to make life easier.

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful Friday!
