Drowning in the Oceans of Negative News

Gloom and doom.

It seems to be everywhere, these days.

Perhaps ”these days” is a bit of an overstatement given that the popular statement of the news industry and the media has long been ”if it bleeds, it leads.” We seem drawn to tragedy and horrible trainwrecks.

But negative news definitely is everywhere, because there's really no business in reporting positive news.

One of the annoying (dangerous?) things about a flurry of negative news is our tendency to freak out and lose sight of our goals and plans, because we get embroiled in worry.

Which basically means that the negative news is succeeding: it is instilling fear and uncertainty in us. And now we have to worry about whether or not our well laid plans — which were thoroughly researched and developed on solid information — suddenly have become invalid because some idiot politician is causing everyone to lose their nut.

But money is still money, even when the world is filled with negative news. If you decide to buy some shares of Tesla you're still owning the same number of shares of Tesla even when everything is going to hell in a handbasket. Chances are everything's going to hell in a handbasket.

There's another old truism about investing in stock markets which is ”never trying to catch a falling knife.”

So if everything is going to hell in a handbasket, your best bet is likely to do nothing at all, even though it is often very difficult to just sit on our hands when disaster seems to be all around.

For example, when our Hive token took yet another nosedive a few weeks back, I bet there were more than a few around here who just decided they had had enough and bailed out, for the final time.

I belong in the camp of people who are now "beyond caring" about the price of our token. If it goes down, it goes down, if it goes up, it goes up. Whoop-tee-doo.

Point being — getting back to the whole "distractions" thing — I am a writer and blogger, and I don't really need to be distracted by sitting around and worrying about whether or not a number is going up or down. I suppose I cared more when Hive was $1.00 because I could materially pay some bills if I needed to. And sometimes I needed to, because taxes... and stuff.

Which brings me around to the whole 2026 goals thing, and it occurred to me yesterday that a worthy goal for the new year is to be less distracted, or perhaps more aware of distractions, and ready to head them off before they interfere with my work.

Easier said than done, when you live with ADHD!

In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy another couple of "slow" days before we uncorked the new year.

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful rest of your week!

As someone who consumes "news" from varied sources, I tend to agree. It is all about intilling fear that the other is coming for you. Doesn;t matter the network or side.
