Changing Times on Facebook...
I had a somewhat useless day today, in part because it started raining and the outdoor projects I was trying to get done ended up being left undone.
Instead, I spent a little more time than I probably should have looking at both my YouTube feed and my Facebook feed. Although I spend most of my pretty likited social media time here on Hive, I think it is a worthy endeavor to keep up with what is out there and what people are saying.
Besides, I'm just curious.
One of the things I find rather interesting is the fact that Facebook now has a growing number of so-called "community volunteers" who manually review posts and are able to manually add "community notes" under those posts. This is not the same as "commenting" and it operates independently people "reporting" posts for whatever reasons.
Much of the focus is on ferreting out obvious AI being presented as human content, and on pointing out obvious falsehoods ("Fake News") posted in the guise of political or health related news. It's a pretty thorough system that eliminates added notes that are clearly personal vendettas through a system of "peer reviews."
I am familiar with the system because (presumably) my account is 20+ years old and free of controversy so I was "invited" to be one of the community volunteers.
What I'm finding interesting is the rapidly increasing number of content creators who are making a point of labeling their content with words like ”No AI,” typically in such a way that it is quite easily visible in the thumbnail images for their content.
To be honest, I am quite happy to see this particular development from Facebook and have already noticed how it is somewhat improving the quality of the content I'm exposed to through my personal feed. It's not that the AI slop is gone, but most of it comes with a note that saves me from wasting time verifying it.
What I suppose is a little bit ironic is that Facebook/Meta was on the forefront of encouraging/developing AI and they now employ human volunteers to point out when something is AI, particularly when the person posting it is taking liberties with reality.
With the current increased political posts (due to the upcoming midterm elections here in the USA) there's also the effort to add "notes" to obviously false claims made by candidates or supporters of candidates. In a way, Facebook has added "fact checkers" to their circus.
So far, most of the notes I have submitted have related to the common practice of having "outrage" at some piece of "news" that actually happened 12 years ago so it is not news but just a troll.
This all doesn't mean I am suddenly a fan of Facebook, just pointing out that at least they seem to be taking steps to reduce their volume of hate mail.
The whole thing also got me to sit back and wonder about trends in the human experience at a greater level. Are we all just lying and exaggerating more than we used to? I feel inclined to suggest that maybe we are, and it's a result of the fact that you need to shout at a higher and higher decibel level in order to be heard by anyone.
Anyway, that's the latest footnote from "over there." And yes, I still do use Facebook as a tool to promote my artwork, and my collctible stamp business.
