No More Copper Spots on Gold

Gold is gold, but when you're selling it's easier to sell shiny gold than ugly, blemished gold. No matter how much technology improves, there will always be impurities in any refined gold. Sometimes these impurities don't affect the finished product at all. Other times they manifest over time as discolored spots, lines, streaks, etc. Luckily, there's a simple way to get rid of these without harming your bar, coin, round, etc.

A few years back, I purchased a 1/10oz gold Prospector round from Prospector's Gold and Gems. They have a low premium, a great design, and they're always in demand. A few months ago, I took out my gold to look at it and noticed copper spots on one of the rounds.

They're not the end of the world, but I like my gold shiny and appealing to look at.

I had read online that some have taken a torch to their gold and it gets rid of the copper spots. The idea is since copper has a lower melting point than gold, hitting the gold with a torch for just a few seconds is enough to melt the copper back into the gold without harming the product.

I happened to have a small torch lighter, so I figured I'd try it. And wouldn't you know it, it worked! Maybe 4-5 seconds of heat, moving the torch in a circular motion, and the copper spots were gone!

What I thought was just a myth or old wive's tale turned out to be true! So, if your gold has copper spots on it, give this little trick a shot and watch the magic happen!

Thanks! Right? Sadly, milk spots are due to poor cleaning processes at the mint. 🙁

Looking at my gold coins... no spots yet. I'll keep the technique in mind.

Awesome! Most of mine don't. I think most government and established private mints don't usually have that issue.
