A Kennedy Saved Is A Kennedy Earned
A couple of days ago I posted about some really nasty looking 1964 Kennedy half dollars. Two of them came in a lot of scrap Sterling silver, and they looked bad. I joked they had been through a nuclear apocalypse. They were so bad I pulled out my Sigma to test them and confirmed they are real.
They had some really nasty stuff on them. I'm thinking it was old glue or something and they were originally used in maybe a coin display.
Gross, right?
Well, I got out a small glass candy dish and let them soak in isopropyl alcohol for a day. Since these coins really don't have numismatic value, I used q-tips to start scrubbing away the gunk. I don't recommend this for numistmatic coins as doing this will scratch them. If you have a coin with numismatic value needing cleaned, your best option is to send them to be professionally graded to preserve them.
Some of the gunk came off, so I was hopeful. I let them soak in a new batch of isopropyl alcohol for another day. I managed to clean the rest of the gunk off, and now they look much better!
Now they're ready to go into the stack. It was a little bit of work, but absolutely worth it. It's a night and day difference! And remember: friends don't let friends put gunk on their coins. 😉

I wonder if they bought them uncirculated, or just got them pretty much from the first bank to give them out?
It's hard to say what condition they were in originally. The US Mint made a lot of these.

They sure look prettier now, too bad they were so abused in the first place. Not everyone respects us numismatics and beat coins up like there was no tomorrow. You could probably sell those on eBay as "cleaned" coins now and still get some premium! Nice score, I've not had much luck finding stuff cheap enough to buy around here. Everyone wants at least spot, and when dealing with junk it's just not worth it!

Yeah, it's unfortunate I had to clean them to get the gunk off. They'll go in the fondle stash for now, but at least I got them for way under spot! 😁

Yup. Looks way better. Last step could be the tin foil and baking soda trick! I do that for sterling jewelry I find.
I have some professional grade coin cleaning solution, but at this point I think I'm good with it. They're just going into a bag with other similar condition coins, so no biggie if they're toned. 😁

I have a few old Mexican silver coins that look like they were once glued to a piece of wood. I used nail polish remover with a bit of elbow grease, maybe isopropyl alcohol is more effective.

It seems to be fairly effective after letting it sit for 24 hours or so, and then trying to remove the glue while under running water. I hope that helps! 🙂
