Nineties Friday With Schwarzenegger and some Great Rock N' Roll

It's Friday again which means it's time for another edition of Nineties Friday. For those unfamiliar with it, this is an event that comes around each Friday where you can create a post to share just about anything from the 1990's. It's a lot of fun, just use the tag #ninetiesfriday and it's never a bad idea to do a shoutout to @geneeverett . He started the event and someone usually walks away with some HSBI units! You can never have too many of those!

In 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger was back with a great sci fi film, Total Recall. They later made a remake, but remakes are never as good as the original. The film also stars a much younger Sharon Stone. Schwarzenegger plays Quaid, a construction worker, who in reality is a spy from Mars, who has his memory erased. After a memory implant procedure he begins to remember who is really is. If you haven't seen it I won't give you more than that, it's a great movie. Definitely worth watching, I just saw it a couple weeks ago and it's a lot of fun to watch.

And just an interesting note, this film was in development since 1974. It took that long to get a studio to finally approve the final film, although it went through multiple changes a long the way!

Here's the original trailer:

The Simpsons

time.com

The Simpsons have been the longest running adult animated cartoon series of all time, spanning from 1989 until today. Some of their best episodes came out in the 1990's in my opinion, and to kick off the music portion of the post we'll start with season 7 episode 4 . Bart replaces the hymn in church with "In-a-gadda-da-vida" by Iron Butterfly calling it "In The Garden of Eden" by L. Ron Butterfly. It's hilarious, enjoy:

And now for some music from the decade:

Bon Jovi

Formed in 1983 in Sayreville, New Jersey this legendary rock band released their first album in 1984 which had some good music and reached the top 40. But their third album in 1986, Slippery When Wet, made the band super stars. To this day I think it's may favorite album by the band. They continued to put out great music into the 1990's with Keep The Faith released in 1992. It had multiple hits including the title track, "Keep The Faith":

Rage Against The Machine

This band formed in 1991 in Los Angeles, California, they were a rock band that had a focus on anti-authoritarianism and anti-capitalism. They fused heavy metal with other genres such as rap, punk, and funk. In 1992 they released their self titled album which was praised by critics and gained the some following, however their second album Evil Empire brought them mainstream success. This song come off the first album, called "Know Your Enemy":

The Smashing Pumpkins

Formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1988 and released their first album Gish in 1991. It was somewhat a success in garnering an underground following. However, their second album Siamese Dream in 1993 was much more successful and often called their best album. It was their third album that finally brought them into the mainstream with Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness in 1995. This song is the lead of song on the second album called "Siamese Dream"
Siamese Dream

The Offspring

I know I shared these guys last week, but they are one of my favorite bands. Formed in Garden Grove, California in 1984 they took ten long years to make it to the mainstream music scene. In 1994 they released their album Smash that became a huge success with multiple hits, including this one "Gotta Get Away":

Since I spent most of the 1990's in countries that really only spoke Spanish, I like to throw in one song that was popular in the era in Spanish. Today I'll go with Mexico.

Thalía

Thalía started singing and acting very young. She was part of a successful group called Timbiriche before parting ways to pursue a solo career in the late 1980's. She has been in some of the most successful telenovelas throughout the 80's and 90's. In 1995 she had a breakout musical success with her album En éxtasis (In ecstasy) followed by an even bigger album in 1997 called Amor a la Mexicana. This is the leadoff song on the album "Amor a la Mexicana** (Mexican Style Love)

That will wrap up this edition of Nineties Friday, I hope you enjoyed it. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below. Thank you everyone so much for all of your support, I deeply appreciate it. Have a great weekend everyone!

hey @thebighigg I liked this one. That mix of rock classics and the nineties vibe, brings back a lot. And that note about Total Recall—true, remakes never feel the same. Cool post, man.

Glad you liked it! Total Recall was a fun movie, but the remake was kind of a let down. That's the way it always is though! Thanks @magicfingerz !

Wow, that’s pretty wild that Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in a film that was originally in the planning stages in 1974 and didn’t hit the theaters till 1990!😳
I guess the producers wanted to make sure it was done the way they wanted!👍😊

I think they had trouble finding a studio that would pay for it. Arnold got added in near the end of the process as he was the biggest star around at the time. But someone was persistent enough to get pushing and shopping around for more than 15 years to get the film made! lol

I’m sure we are talking about a lot of money, especially with Arnold Schwarzenegger as the leading actor!😊
I guess the studio wanted to be sure they would make a profit!😇

I think Jon said that Keep The Faith is his least favorite album. Apparently they used a lot of outside writers or something because the label wanted them to and that really didn't sit right with him.

I could see that, when it's not really your music you don't enjoy it as much. I guess as they pushed into the 1990's the label wanted to make sure they kept producing hits that made the label money.

Yeah, I think that's why they eventually split with them. At least part of the reason.
