holoz0r's A-Z of Steam: Command & Conquer: Renegade

If you're as old as me, and you're a PC gamer, you've probably played something from the Command and Conquer series. But have you played Renegade? Unlike almost every other game in the series, which is a real time strategy title, Renegade is a first person shooter.

Well, not entirely a first person shooter, because you get to jump into vehicles as well as roam about on foot; and those sequences are rendered in the third person.

This game was released in 2002, making it over twenty years old at the time of my writing this review. A lot has changed in gaming in twenty years, but Renegade still feels modern.

I had no problems running the Steam version of the game on Linux, I have no idea about Windows Compatibility, but the game ran smoothly, without any crashes.

This is truly an old school game. It is mostly scripted events, linear, and suffers a little from that age, and the rigid structure. Animation on units in the battlefield is a bit rough, but there's rudimentary lip sync. The character models are also THICCC, in the sense that these characters have real bulk, which you would expect, for hardened war-people.

Like many strategy games, the objectives on offer in this shooter are not very varied. Each level tends to have a "go here, kill them, blow that up", sort of structure, with different vehicle sequences thrown into the mix for a bit of variety.

Enemy intelligence is also lacking for games of that era, compared to things like Half-Life.

There are also a lot of elements of Commmand and Conquer's rich lore deposited all over the levels of the game. In an early mission, you are rescuing some prisoners from a concentration camp like structure, and you can destroy the projector that is feeding them their "retraining" material, prior to freeing them. That training material is broadcast for you to hear, and serves to make the game more immersive.

I am fairly sure that there are better games to play in the present day, but I don't know that there are games that have such a comedic, self aware tutorial.

You're shot by an officer explaining how armour and health works. You get healed. She shoots you again to demonstrate, just in case you missed the point. Probably a war crime, but hilarious, and so very offbeat and in universe for Command and Conquer.

Renegade is a fun little relic of the past, if you like old-school shooters, with all the awkwardness that comes with them.

Never really played through most of the games. Though I do remember Red Alert's really cool Hell March soundtrack.

I have them installed. I am willing, I just need to find, the time. They're huge games. They were huge games. Today, they feel like bigger games, because they don't make them this big anymore.

Merging with EA was the worst thing Westwood could've done. They deserved a much better fate. But now they're just another name that got killed off under EA's destructive arm.

Take me back to 1997-2002, so many God tier games in that era, before video game publishers got mega corporate, and it became about profits, not game play and experiences.

Wow does this bring back nostalgic memories. Believe it or not, I did play this game on PC when it was released. It wasn't the best game, but it was so cool getting to finally play as "boots on the ground" in the Command and Conquer universe after playing the standard RTS game for so long. Thanks for the good memories. 😀

I recently played Generals, and that gave me the best memories. So many hours lost to that game.

Good times! I don't think I ever played Generals. The one I played the most was Red Alert 2. Same as you though, so many hours lost to that game.

I played that one! Like most C&C games. Always a fan of strategy and shooter. Unfortunately, I never got to play this one to the end. There was a bug in the crack, or the code, or whatever, and I couldn't get past one point, the game froze. And it wasn't good enough to download it another time, let alone buy it.

There was another game that was equally dark and horrifying, Postal. Incredibly brutal and totally senseless, but hilarious.

So many games were like that. I remember not ever being able to finish Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines because of a similar issue - it was released broken, it was patched, then the studio was resolved, and hte game was still in a state where it couldn't be finished... until fans patched it!

That was a fun game! But yeah, it happens often. And rolling back is not an option, it always has to be patched with more code and more bugs.

I had no idea that this game existed. I played more than my fair share of CC hours many eons ago. Once I discovered Civilization, CC was abandoned. I rediscovered Diablo a year or two ago... more hours of my life vanished. Lol. These are great mind washing games.

I have over 500 hours in Civ5. One of my fav games. Probably about the same in Civ4. Don't talk to me about action rpgs like Diablo. I played a lot. I want to play a lot more. It is all about finding the time :D

That sounds a lot like DOOM

Yeah, it's a first person shooter, There are also direct references to coloured key cards in the tutorial of the game.

Though separated by years and years, the enemy intelligence is probably on the same level as the original DOOM. :)

The only thing missing are the demons and the good code by iD.
