Stripes Is One Of The Funniest Military Comedies Ever Made. Bill Murray And Harold Ramis Turned A Simple Army Story Into A Comedy Classic. More Than Forty Years Later, It Is Still One Of The Most Entertaining Comedies Of The Eighties.

Some comedies lose their magic over time, but Stripes has managed to stay funny for more than four decades. Released in 1981, it arrived during a great era for comedy films and quickly became one of Bill Murray’s defining movies. It may not be the most realistic military film ever made, but that was never the point.

The film was directed by Ivan Reitman, who had an incredible run of comedies during the late seventies and eighties. Reitman knew exactly how to let talented comedians do what they did best, and Stripes became another major success before he would later direct Ghostbusters.

Bill Murray stars as John Winger, a man whose life completely falls apart in a single day. After losing his job, his apartment, and his girlfriend, he convinces his best friend Russell Ziskey to join the Army with him in hopes of starting over. Murray’s sarcastic humor and effortless charm carry the movie from beginning to end.

Harold Ramis plays Russell, the loyal best friend who somehow gets talked into following John’s crazy idea. The chemistry between Murray and Ramis is outstanding, and it is easy to see why they became one of the great comedy teams of that era.

The supporting cast is excellent as well. Warren Oates is unforgettable as Sergeant Hulka, the tough but fair drill instructor who has to deal with one disaster after another. John Candy delivers plenty of laughs as Dewey “Ox” Oxberger, while John Larroquette, Judge Reinhold, Sean Young, P. J. Soles, and John Diehl all add memorable performances.

The story follows a group of completely unprepared recruits as they stumble through basic training. Thanks to John Winger’s constant wisecracks and refusal to follow the rules, chaos seems to follow the platoon everywhere they go. Eventually, what begins as a simple comedy turns into an unexpected military adventure.

One of the biggest reasons Stripes works so well is because the characters feel like ordinary people. None of them are action heroes or perfect soldiers. They are just a group of misfits trying to figure things out, and that is what makes them so easy to root for.

The humor is classic Bill Murray. His dry delivery, sarcastic attitude, and ability to make even ordinary conversations funny are on full display throughout the movie. There are countless memorable lines that comedy fans still quote today.

John Candy also deserves special recognition. Even though he is not the main character, every scene he appears in becomes funnier. Candy had a natural ability to make audiences laugh without ever looking like he was trying too hard, and Stripes is another great example of that talent.

What I enjoy most about Stripes is that it captures the spirit of early eighties comedy. The movie is silly, energetic, and completely unafraid to embrace ridiculous situations. It reminds me of a time when Hollywood was making original comedies built around great performers instead of relying on special effects.

For me, Stripes is one of those movies I can watch anytime. The cast is fantastic, Ivan Reitman’s direction keeps everything moving, and Bill Murray is at the top of his game. It may not be the greatest comedy ever made, but it is absolutely one of the funniest military comedies of all time.

More than forty years later, Stripes remains a true comedy classic. It introduced audiences to an unforgettable group of characters, delivered nonstop laughs, and helped define an era of comedy that many of us still miss today. If you enjoy old school comedies with a great cast and endless one liners, this movie is always worth revisiting.
