Conan The Barbarian Is A Legendary Fantasy Adventure. Arnold Schwarzenegger Created An Iconic Character. It Remains A Timeless Classic That Still Holds Up Today.
Some movies become classics because of their story, and others because they create an entire world that audiences never forget. Conan The Barbarian is one of those films. Released in 1982, it became one of the most influential fantasy movies ever made and helped establish Arnold Schwarzenegger as a major movie star.

The film was directed by John Milius, who brought a unique style and seriousness to the fantasy genre. Instead of making a simple sword and sorcery adventure, Milius created a movie that felt like a myth brought to life. The atmosphere, music, and world building helped separate it from many other fantasy films of its time.
Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Conan, a warrior who grows up seeking revenge after his village is destroyed and his family is killed. This role became one of Schwarzenegger’s most iconic performances because it perfectly matched his physical presence and screen charisma.
The supporting cast adds a lot to the film as well. James Earl Jones plays Thulsa Doom, the powerful and dangerous leader who becomes Conan’s greatest enemy. Jones brings a calm but intimidating presence to the role, making him one of the most memorable fantasy villains.
The story follows Conan from his childhood through his journey as a warrior, thief, and fighter. After years of hardship and slavery, Conan sets out on a quest for revenge against Thulsa Doom. Along the way, he discovers friendship, loyalty, and his own purpose in a brutal world.
One of the biggest strengths of Conan The Barbarian is the world it creates. The landscapes, costumes, battles, and sets all give the movie an epic feeling. It feels like a legend being told rather than just a regular action movie.
The film’s music by Basil Poledouris is another major reason it stands out. The powerful score gives every scene more emotion and makes the battles and dramatic moments feel even larger. It is one of the most memorable soundtracks in fantasy movie history.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was still early in his acting career when he made this film, but the role of Conan helped prove he could carry a movie. Conan does not rely on long speeches or complicated dialogue. The character is built around strength, determination, and presence, which Schwarzenegger delivered perfectly.
The action scenes are another highlight. The sword fights, battles, and training sequences give the movie a physical style that still feels impressive today. It is not just about the fights though, because the story gives those moments meaning through Conan’s personal journey.
What makes Conan The Barbarian special is that it takes its fantasy world seriously. It does not feel like a joke or a simple adventure. The movie has a darker tone, with themes of survival, revenge, power, and destiny running throughout the story.
Even though it was released before the big fantasy movie boom that came later, its influence can still be seen in many films that followed. It helped prove that fantasy stories could be taken seriously on the big screen and paved the way for future adventures.
For me, Conan The Barbarian is a great film because it has a style and identity all its own. The cast is memorable, John Milius created an incredible world, and Arnold Schwarzenegger delivered a role that became part of movie history.

While it is not actually a nineties film, it has the same kind of lasting appeal as many beloved movies from that era. Conan The Barbarian remains a true classic because it delivers action, adventure, and a legendary character that audiences still remember decades later.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Arnold is just awesome!
absolutely awesome movie. One of my favorite aspects of it is that while there are breaks, there is kind of a musical accompaniment that is going on throughout the whole film. Kind of like there is an orchestra there that is playing along with the movie from the opening credits all the way to the end.
