Some Boomtown Silver from Las Vegas!

What a busy day! Most of the day I've spent running errands and getting medical tests done. Hopefully those will give me good new, it's always stressful to get a test done and wait for the results. So to distract myself, I put together a fun post about a cool silver strike token!

I've been collecting Silver Strike tokens for many years now. They are tokens that are made of brass or silver than could be won in the Silver Strike Slot Machines that used to be found in most casinos around the world some years back. Now only a handful of the machines remain so these commemorative tokens are becoming harder to find. I prefer to collect tokens from defunct casinos, making them part of history. Today I have just one of those to share!

silverstrikers.com

What I love about these tokens is that they contain just about 0.6 Troy ounces of pure silver surrounded by a brass ring. So not only do you get a collectible from a casino, you are getting real silver which will always have value. Additionally, I love the miner in the design side panning for gold, something I have done myself many times over the years. Best of all, Boomtown is a thing of the past, the building is now the Silverton Hotel and Casino.

Ed Roski Jr.

Most of the time when I share these tokens I share a bit about it's casino origin. Today I think instead I'll share more information about the man who created the casino. He was the son of Ed Roski Sr. who was born to poor Polish immigrant parents. Ed Sr. joined the Navy during World War 2 and moved the family to southern California upon his return. He then started Majestic Realty in 1948.

Timing is life is everything, and Majestic Realty did very well. Ed Jr. born in 1938 joined the Marines during the Vietnam War. He was wounded in combat and is a decorated veteran. Upon his return he eventually took up the reigns and ran the real estate company turning it into an empire. It also made him a billionaire.

In 1989 he purchased 80 acres of land along the I-15 freeway in Las Vegas. This was the genesis of Boomtown. From 1994 until 1997 that was the name of the establishment. It was renovated in 1997 and renamed the Silverton. Through many many renovations it retains that name and the same owner.

What makes Ed so interesting is not so much his real estate ventures, it is his desire to explore. He has bicycled across Ireland, Mongolia, Myanmar, and Russia. He has been on deep diving expeditions off on New Guinea, and even visited the Titanic aboard a Russian submersible. In addition, he has been a mountaineer visiting base camp of Mount Everest and K2. He climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. Who says money doesn't bring privilege?

He has seen more in his life than most of us will ever see. But his drive to explore the world and the depths of the ocean has kept him going. I wish I could visit those ocean depths! The luxuries of being a casino owner...

That will wrap up my post for this Wednesday. I hope you enjoyed it! Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below. Thank you so much for all of your support, it's deeply appreciated. Have a great day everyone!

Ed sounds like quite the adventurer!👍😊
Not all that are wealthy, would choose to follow his adventures, but money gave this man the funding to follow his heart exploring the world!💪🤗😊

The money really gave him the opportunity to explore and he took advantage! I think he was always an explorer at heart and would have been like the early explorers had he lived back then.

It's crazy how much a casino can change the landscape of a town. They were going to put one down by the river in the town I used to live in, but the public was against it. It would have been a big boon for the area, but now it just sits vacant.

What a shame that casino never happened. It would have created hundreds of construction jobs and then permanent jobs at the casino itself. It would have brought in a lot of money for the area, even the school districts would have had more money. You could have even better toys at work!

Well, yes and no. For the area itself, it wasn't a smart move. Instead they built the casino further north which just happens to be in the school district where I work, so we get about $150,000 per year in grant money that we have been able to do a lot of cool things with. Now it's in the middle of a farm field though, it would have been cooler on the river.

Sounds like Ed is the kind of person living life to it's fullest.
Perhaps, having a close brush with death in Vietnam may have inspired him into a life of venture and adventure.

He sure took advantage of his wealth, his father set up the company in southern California at the right time when property was cheap. what once sold for $30K now sell for $5 million. Maybe his experience in Vietnam did inspire him to live life to the fullest, and the money sure helped him achieve it!
