Silver Stallions from the Colorado River

For several years of my life I lived in the United States desert southwest. It's a very pretty place, although it can get pretty hot in summer. In Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada there isn't any real beach front property as they are land locked states. What they do offer are some beautiful rivers. Today I'll be taking you back to the Colorado River in Laughlin, Nevada.

I've been collecting Silver Strike tokens for many years now. They are tokens that are made of brass or silver than could be won in the Silver Stike Slot Machines that used to be found in most casinos around the world some years back. Now only a handful of the machines remain so these commemorative tokens are becoming harder to find. I usually prefer tokens from defunct casinos that are now part of history, but on this one I made an exception because it just so nicely done.

About the token:

From silverstrikers.com

I love the horses they have on the design side of the token, and the desert profile on the logo side isn't bad either. I picked this one up one eBay a long time ago, isn't it nice? I contains just about 0.6 Troy ounces of silver surrounded by a brass ring. So not only are these getting more scarce, they contain precious metal which means they will always have value.

Edgewater Hotel and Casino

edgewater-casino.com

As the name implies, this facility is right next to the Colorado River. I have never personally stayed there, but I have driven by it several times. Most hotel/casinos on the water offer boat and personal watercraft rentals onsite, but the Edgewater doesn't seem to which I find odd. During the summer getting out on the water is the best way to cool off. Temperatures often run around 106 F (41 C) this time of year.

The hotel seems to have pretty good reviews, so maybe it wouldn't be a bad place to stay. It's been many long years since I've been to Laughlin though. It really is a nice little city, and a lot less crowded than Las Vegas! But there is a lot less to do as well, but the desert scenery does make up for it!

And below I found a picture of the Colorado River just outside of Laughlin. What I love about the river is just how blue it is. This is the same river that carved out the Grand Canyon over millions of years, and it really is beautiful. It's a great way to enjoy water sports when you're far from the ocean.

I wonder if it was by a lake if it would have more of a draw. Rivers can be tricky like that sometimes with the currents and what not. Still a pretty cool piece and the casino itself looks pretty cool too.

There is Lake Mead but water levels have been down the last few years. Lake Havasu is a lot of fun, I've been there several times!

Beats Yuma, where it routinely gets over 114 F in the middle of summer! It's a pretty river, unlike the Rio Grande that's muddy like the Mississippi!

Not likely, I really have no reason to go to Laughlin anymore. So I doubt I'll ever pass through the city again!

I actually have a vintage round with somewhat similar horses fighting by a Colorado group. I will look for it, then show you!

I'm not a gambler type but I like these Casino silver tokens especially if they have a pirate theme. I have three so far, two of them are from Treasure Island and that is about it.

So few of them do unfortunately. Treasure Island was just about the only place that produced them! I don't gamble much either, I have better things to do with my money!
