Don't go to hard on spending Hive before you understand it.
Also, looks like this round (after 7 days) will reset the sloths again (the ones that produce attack and cost a bit of Hive), so don't feel like buying too many because they will have to go "reset" (ish lost - even if you can swap them for Slothium).
I just spent one Hive and do not plan to spend any further :) I am not a gamer, just curious. But very well made, this game!
Here's the 'short' version:
Join the game
Claim your honey pot
Hire miners - bees first!
Bees create honey. Their mining rate is your leaderboard position.
Honey can be burnt for the burn-em-honey pot, or used to buy more bees/sloth.
Hire Sloth miners:
Sloths mine honeycomb; this is your attack/defence.
Attack other players and steal their honey, or attack the boss and earn a share of his pool!
Plus the hot potatoes - booster/game sponsor: buy em, get the rewards, hope someone buys them off you for immediate profit, or hold 'em and reap their reward longer term, giving you an edge over the enemy!
3 prize pools: leaderboard for bee miner rate, burn em honey pot for staked honey, boss pool for defeating the boss.
