the houses here in the center of town are built close together and most are quite close to the street. they are wooden and though old most of them have been modernized and insulated with new siding while keeping much of the exterior detail of the original design. it gives the place a distinct historical feel but since this is a shadow community i will not focus on the architecture other than how it pertains to the realm of shadows. the gray house with the three mailboxes is casting its shadow onto the side wall of the white house. included in that shadow are some windows in the side wall of the gray house. it is not obvious from the photo how the design of the house allows this, perhaps there is a glassed in veranda in the rear of the house. nonetheless it is certain that the sun is shining through those windows and that the wooden parts separating their panes of glass are casting their shadows onto the side of the white house
since the sun is from the side and slightly behind there isn't any direct sunlight on the front wall and fence. not shown in the photo, there's another house across the street with the sun shining on it. the windows from the street front of that house are reflecting light onto the front wall and fence of the white house. the vertical wood separating the two sides of the window is called a mullion while the horizontal piece is called a transom. the moveable hinged wood surrounding the glass is collectively called a sash. though it may appear so, none of these curiously named wooden structures are casting their shadow onto the white house. quite unlike the shadow of the windows on the side wall, only the glass from across the street is reflecting light onto the otherwise completely shaded white front wall and fence.
