entry reflections 244: the curved mirrors of Dome Next Door, Riga

Dome Square is the main square in Riga, located in Old Town with a number of prominent historical buildings including the Dome Cathedral, the Ministry of Finance, the Riga Bourse House, Latvia Radio and more. last year a wonderfully creative addition was added to the square with the installation of Dome Next Door. it's a playful interactive experience with among other things fantastical seating arrangements but when i noticed the curved mirrors i didn't sit for a minute. the architecture of the square has a long history with the present day look a curious mix of many different styles but these mirrors facing different directions capture and distort them all into fantastically impractical structures far beyond the wildest dreams of the various architects and their respective styles. and the people and objects in the square don't escape either

when seen in the mirror the solid and prestigious Ministry of Finance is reformed into a whimsical house of exuberance

here it is finally revealed that i was raised in a Mangbetu tribe and am particularly fond of strudel
