Watching the Kite Festival with My Kids [ENG - IDN]

Mini Janggan Kite

It was 10:30 a.m. on a Sunday, two weeks ago. The sun shone intensely, and the sky was a brilliant, clear blue, dotted with clusters of white clouds—as if the Creator had intentionally scattered them there to enhance the beauty of the day.

Although the heat was scorching, it did not deter the young people who had gathered. Some arrived alone, but most came in groups of two to five, each group bringing their own kites—often more than two per group.

Indeed, a kite festival was taking place that day, organized by a group of young people in my village. As far as I know, they have held this festival several times, starting sometime last year or two.

It was hosted in the rice fields near my home; the festival is typically held after the rice harvest, so the fields used for the event were dry.

I walked to the festival from my house with my two children—it’s only about 250 meters away. Upon arriving, I found the area bustling with young kite enthusiasts—known in Balinese as *Rare Angon*.

They brought kites featuring a wide variety of designs. The festival included competitions for several types of traditional kites. The frames were crafted from shaved bamboo, covered with plastic sheets in colors chosen according to the creator's own creativity. I noticed that none of the kites at this festival had a wingspan exceeding two meters.

Watching them fly their kites with such excitement brought back memories of when I was their age, joining my friends in the annual kite competition held at Padanggalak Beach. Although I’m not a kite enthusiast myself, I still fondly recall the joy of flying our giant kite—which had a three-meter wingspan, a bamboo frame, and a fabric cover—together with my friends.

Unlike in the past, the kites used in competitions today are designed to be "knockdown"—they are assembled only upon arrival at the site, ready for flight. The frames can be taken apart and packed down, making them space-efficient and easy to transport. There’s no longer any need to rent a large truck just to haul a single kite, as was the case in the old days.

I especially love watching *Janggan* kites in the sky. They are designed to resemble dragons, complete with an incredibly long tail—sometimes stretching anywhere from over a dozen to hundreds of meters.

*Janggan* kites are considered sacred; their creation requires specific ceremonies or rituals, particularly for the dragon-like mask. However, this smaller-scale festival does not feature the giant *Janggan* kites that require such elaborate rituals. Yet, it still leaves me transfixed whenever I see it flying in the sky.

Are there any unique stories about kites where you live, or perhaps you have an unforgettable experience of your own from flying kites?

Meskipun aku bukan penggemar layangan, aku senang ramai-ramai menerbangkan layangan raksasa kami.

This reminds me of my childhood! I used to love flying kites when I was a kid. We would go to the coastal area and compete with each other to see whose kite could fly the highest. Seeing these kites brings back so many beautiful memories!

I'm glad there are still kids in your area who enjoy flying kites and playing outdoors instead of spending all their time on their phones. It's nice to see them enjoying the simple things that made our childhood so memorable.

Where I live, it’s rare to see girls flying kites; it’s mostly the boys who do it.
I’m glad this post of mine could bring back your childhood memories—reminding us of how happy we used to be, playing together with friends back in the day, long before gadgets.

This is a small festival organized by the teenagers in my village. Beyond simply pursuing a hobby, they hold this event to earn some money; participants are required to pay a registration fee to take part. I’m not sure exactly how much, but every kite entered into the competition incurs a fee. There are cash prizes for the teams whose kites win.

The Kite Festival, held annually at Padang Galak Beach, is a large-scale event that draws kite enthusiasts from all over Bali—and it seems there are even international participants. The kites featured in this competition are massive in size.
