"Groundnuts !"

It's my favourite insult of all those available to British Parliamentarians (who, by tradition, don't actually swear at each other). Sadly, with an intake of newer, less cultured MP's it has been used less in the last few years.

It is shouted out as a way of heckling any speaker (especially government ministers) who are waffling on about something they know nothing of. Particularly if they are championing some ill thought-out plan or scheme.

The origins of the insult are back in the 1950's, to one of the most ridiculous late colonial projects set up and funded by the British Government.

The idea was simple; solve the UK's postwar shortage of cooking oils and edible fats by growing peanuts in what was then Tanganyika. Lots and lots of peanuts. Which are, of course, just groundnuts under another name.

The problem was that it was a grand idea backed up by a complete failure of intelligence. There was no pilot plan to find out if clearing the 3 million acres of bush would be as easy as they expected. No-one did any research to determine if the soil was suitable, and (most crucially of all) there was no rainfall data gathered in what turned out to be a highly arid drought-prone environment.

The result is exactly what you'd expect; mismanagement and total failure. Less than 2000 tons of groundnuts were harvested, far less than the weight planted as seeds.

Ever since then, groundnuts have been a Parliamentary shorthand used as an insult against those who cook up some completely irrational plan with no basis in reality.
