[FreeWrite] Thinking About Upgrading the Laptop but...

avatar

My main PC, which is a laptop had its battery die recently. First it started to last 40 minutes intead of 2 hours, and now it lasts less than 3 minutes. I can only work with the laptop if it's connected to an outlet now.

I've been thinking about upgrading my laptop for a while now, and this became my excuse to check on options... So, I looked up Laptops on Amazon to see what are the prices, and also researched which laptops will satisfy my needs.

I'd like to use AI Tools offline, that includes Image Generation, so I wanted a Nvidia RTX series, or an equivalent. I thought it'd be cheaper to use AMD alternatives, but After researching Ryzen AI series, I realized that Laptops with AMD APUs, even the latest ones, don't have the technology for running AI locally... At least not as good as Nvidia GPUs Laptops with the same prices.

In my research I also noticed that I need an RTX GPU with at least xx60 series. That I need to have RTX 3060 or better. Looking at the laptop prices on Amazon, I figured I need RTX 4060 or better. Since I plan on dual-booting Windows and Linux, I have to have at least 1TB Storage, (preferably 2TB,) and 16GB RAM, (preferably 32GB.)

All of these requirements will make the laptop I need to be on the $1000-$1500 Range... I can't afford this for now, at least not comfortably...

I may decide on a cheaper laptop without NVIDIA GPU, anything released in the last 3 years would be better my current Laptop, and a Ryzen-based Laptop in the $600-$700 range would last me a long time assuming I won't be using it for local LLM inference. I actually found a few good ones on Amazon.. That'd be my fallback option.

My current direction is to accumelate more money so I can afford the "dream" laptop I mentioned above, and maybe look at used PCs in my local areas, maybe I'll find a deal like that for cheap. Not sure if I'll go this direction, since Batteries on used Laptops are really bad here...

Well, only time will tell what I'll choose. إن شاء الله

What do you think?

This article was written as a #freewrite attempt. Spent 15 minutes writing, and a few minutes editing after that. Was a good writing exercise.

Is it just not an option to replace the battery in the current one? Or is the machine just getting so old that it wouldn't be worth it anymore? My M2 Macbook Pro is also seeing the battery health deplete stupidly fast recently, having lost 5% in less than a month, but I think I'd just opt for getting that replaced instead of throwing out more cash at a new model.

Forgot to mention that... Won't be getting a battery for two reasons:

  • The build of my laptop is getting weaker, so it may break if "opened" one more time, so I'll need to buy a new casing with the battery... Getting a new laptop is more attractive.
  • Replacement batteries where I live, let's say, hard to know if they're genuine or low quality Chinese copies... If I'm buying one that's guaranteed to be good/last long, I'll have to pay what I could get a new laptop (if weaker) with in the first place.

So, what you think?

Yeah I get you on the quality of the batteries. If I get mine replaced I'd buy an official one online, have it imported, and then take the two to a repair centre. I don't think I'd trust whatever crap they put in.

Seems like it is best for you to just try to save up and get another. Have you considered desktops or are those way out of the price range for anything decent these days?

I rather have a laptop instead of a desktop because I can't trust the electricity in my country... Nowadays we don't have as much blackouts, but it used to go out for 12 hours a day, and I'm afraid this may come back.

Out of curiosity, how many people over there have been buying up larger powerbanks? Are there districts/complexes which have backup generators? Perhaps more 'elite' ones? It can be a bit similar in Armenia. Some areas get completely screwed over with frequent power cuts and daily water outages around midnight. Others have almost no problems anymore at all.

A lot of people have power generators that feed a house worth... Even public places, especially mosques, almost every mosque I go to has one.

Sadly, we're not in a financial situation that allows that. We have spare power banks and smaller electricity tools, though.

I don't have a Macbook, but their build quality is good, and their costumer support as far as I know is great too, so maybe getting a replacement battery would be good for you.
