Love between summer and stove - mission impossible

This late hour of the evening (22:05) is not a usual time when I start thinking about writing a post, although these days with the heatwave, maybe it becomes my regular posting time... And a time for doing something else - having a free sauna session in the kitchen. 😂

Actually, I decided yesterday that I will not cook anymore while it is this hot. If we die from hunger, I don't care! It is just not human to cook under these conditions when the thermometer shows more than 30 degrees Celsius in the kitchen, be near hot pans or, God forbid, ovens.

20250628_220511.jpg

Sorry, I was wrong, the thermometer on my kitchen clock shows 31.1 degrees Celsius. 😁 It is definitely better to choose any other room or the balcony, where the temperatures are more bearable and make some abstract art. Something like this:

20250628_222021.jpg

Silly me, it is not art!

It is the glass lid of my pot in which finely chopped onions, carrots, green peas, potatoes, and diced turkey meat marinated with garlic and parsley are being cooked right now.

So, I already broke my proposal... 🤦‍♀ I already started to cook when my first thought about this post arrived. Or did it happen the other way? The idea came when I started to cook... I think this is the correct order of things. Please bear with me, I am under the sauna treatment, and I could write nonsense here. 😅

What is neither funny nor nonsense is the consideration of spending as little time as possible behind the stove during the summer. The problem is that we like to have cooked meals for lunch, because that is how we learned it from childhood. As an unwritten rule in our minds is the deeply embedded thought that something cold, like a sandwich, cannot and should not be lunch. If I just think what my grandmother would say if she saw me with such a "lunch"... the idea would be rejected in a second. So, the day that we would skip the cooked main meal still hadn't arrived.

Just a moment, I will be back... I have to check my tomorrow's lunch.

20250628_222648.jpg

I will try to choose dishes that don't need hours of cooking, and that don't need several pots and pans that mercilessly heat the kitchen. (like cooking soup, frying meat, cooking vegetables, etc, all for one lunch of several courses). I like one-pot dishes - these will often be on the menu. I would try with cold salads as well, preparing the ingredients in advance and cooling them down in the fridge before the time to have lunch arrives. More options are omelettes of eggs and vegetables, fresh vegetables with canned tuna and boiled eggs, roasted meat or fish that don't require a long cooking time, ice cream (no, that is not a valid option for lunch haha), buy ready-made food and eat it at home, etc...

What I am What I was (as the cooking time finished while I was writing my options) cooking this evening is our one-pot lunch for tomorrow. I will cool it down and have it ready when we come home tomorrow from my gig and the beach that is planned in the schedule. As I already mentioned, it contains onion, carrots, turkey meat, garlic, parsley, green peas and potatoes - ingredients I consider healthy and nutritious. The best part is that I will not have to cook it tomorrow. 😁

So, how do you handle the topic of cooking during summer? Do you have some creative ideas on how to avoid it but still have cooked and healthy dishes at your table? If you like, please share with us some of your options. 😇

I am most annoyed when cooking during the summer. It feels like being in a sauna! Lol. Anyway, I also prepare some foods to get ready for tomorrow, but happens once in a while when I am not too busy for the day.

Hello ☺️🤗, it is not easy to cook with a lot of heat, but creative cooking does not stop🤣, a good idea is to make fresh salads, cold drinks full of flavor. I drank a very cold soda and ate some pastries so I wouldn't have to cook elaborate meals 😂

Indeed, creative cooking never stops! 😁 So let's be creative and cook without stoves and ovens hahaha

Good morning @mipiano, I understand you perfectly. Cooking in summer with temperatures above 30 degrees is a real horror story.

Yesterday I had pizza and ice cream for dinner. It's not that the oven doesn't give off heat... But you put the pizza in, set the timer, and leave. Although what I usually have for dinner throughout the year are sandwiches and salads. They're ideal for summer.

Te deseo un gran domingo. Abrazo 🤗

Good morning @enraizar

Hahah, a horror story 🤣
But somehow we always survive that horror movie of cooking during summer.

Let the oven do it's work and leave the kitchen - that's a good idea 👌😉

Thank you and a great Sunday to you too @enraizar

Good afternoon @enraizar

Gracias, feliz domingo igualmente. :)

Good morning @mipiano
I hope that the temperature will drop a little, but not so that you can cook, but spend time outside. I remember, it was a long time ago, my family went to the village over the summer and left me at home alone. I had cooked meals in the freezer, which I just needed to reheat, but it was so warm that I avoided that too. I spent the entire vacation of my parents on a light breakfast (sandwich) and tomato and cheese for lunch, and cold cucumber for dinner. I lost a few kilos, but I survived 😃 without turning on the stove to raise the temperature in the apartment.

Thank you, we have spent some time on the beach, came home and found a bearable temperature in the apartment as everything was closed and in the dark, and then just switched on the air conditioner. It is good in this way. ;)

Oh, so your parents went on vacation to the village and left you at home alone? 😲 Well, I would go as well hahah (if you didn't have to go to school or to work, or it was your choice to stay in the city) as in the countryside, summers are always adventurous in their way! 😁

It was 1995, the summer when I had the longest summer vacation in the life of a student, after finishing high school when I entered the university, and when I worked for the summer in a youth cooperative.

At home we also learned the same thing, that you always have to cook and it should be homemade, which is tastier and healthier... and it is, but summer is overwhelming, so I look for other options and I also cook at night for the next day so I don't have to be cooking in 35-degree heat, ha ha ha.

Fresh options would be cakes, pies, various salads, homemade hamburgers, stuffed pork loin that you can cut into pieces and eat cold with salad...

We had the same education food-wise then ;))

I usually don't cook at night, but I loved today to come home and just take out from the fridge the dish I prepared last night! I heated the bit that we would eat, and that's my time spent in the kitchen today haha, I might start loving this way of preparing food in advance :))

For convenience, I cook at night, otherwise I don't have time. But it always has to be homemade!!! It's hot....

In summer, we survive on salads: one day pasta, another rice, another just lettuce... and for protein, grilled meat or canned tuna added to the salads. To keep things interesting, I change the ingredients or try different dressings. ☺️

That is a good survival strategy 😀. I must learn to prepare different salads to have variety. Thank you for telling me your options. 😇

Making lists also helps me to organise our menu in advance, although many dishes on the list are those that require heat 😂 I mean additional heat to one that the sun provides us in Spain these days 😁

Saludos amiga mipiano.

For well over 30 years I lived in a very hot area (summer would have days over 100 F - that's over 37 C). I remember when we had over 70 days in a row that way. The temperature overnight may drop by 20, if we were lucky.

Now I'm on the Gulf coast, but further south. It's not as hot (still hot, just not as hot), but very humid, so it may as well be that hot.

We live inside air conditioned homes, but that can become expensive, so we try to keep the use of the oven down, too. However, using an Instant Pot, Slow Cooker, or even a Rice Cooker can help. The Instant Pot, especially, will cut down since it is a much shorter cooking time.

Another thing we do is to cook outside on a barbeque grill. Not just the meat, but the veggies, too.

Anything to keep the temperature down to use less electricity on the air conditioning.

Funny thing, though, this year we have had cooler temperatures than normal.

Good for you to have cooler temperatures this year. ;)

We will see our electricity bill haha, the air conditioning is a good thing but it indeed spends energy, so we don't have it always switched on either. And it doesn't reach the kitchen well, so I prefer to close the kitchen door and open the windows. In the evening it is better so I liked yesterday's experiment as today it is cool in the apartment haha, no stove was used, just to heat a bit of the dish and that's all. 😉

The same problem for me too, dear @mipiano, since the temperatures in our area have become similar to yours. Out of curiosity, I wanted to try the sauna and now I would have the chance while cooking, but in the sauna you have to be naked... and it's risky, you are exposed to some unpleasant accidents... We cook to have enough for several days, usually three days. This way, food becomes boring, but we can avoid cooking daily.

An apron could help to protect from unpleasant accidents while cooking, so the sauna in the way you mention can be tried as well 😁

I also like to have food for at least two days. When it is just the two of us (husband and I), it is easy. When my son is at home, it is doable as well, but adding more quantity of the ingredients. But we had guests at home for three weeks, so it was impossible 😅😂

How are you? Are you recovering? 🤞

Ha, ha... an apron, of course.
It's not quite a recovery, but I feel better. I even took another trip, and now I'm still away from home. I'm going to have physiotherapy this month, more MRIs, and we'll see.
Thanks, @mipiano! Hopefully, the heat will subside.

Good idea to cook in advance so that when you arrive, surely tired, you only have to eat and relax, at least that's how I imagine it =)
