The Art of Taking Risks

As stated in the introduction to this week’s topic #w170e2, human beings—and animals as well—take risks daily. Some are vitally important, while others are on a smaller scale, but still, all influence the course of life.

I personally believe that taking risks is more an art than a science, as it often involves what we call intuition or a sixth sense, and most of the time, they must be taken without having all the relevant information—perhaps that’s precisely why it’s called a risk.

Every human activity involves a risk; some of them are taken by others but still affect us for the rest of our lives.

But let’s limit ourselves to the risks we willingly choose. The career path we select is often one of the most pivotal decisions of our lives. Many times, we must take the risk of studying what we love, knowing we might not later receive a job offer in that field.

Other times, we calculate the risk in monetary terms: for instance, if we study X field, we would earn more money than if we pursued what our true calling desires. But we don’t factor in the risk of ending up frustrated and unhappy.

It’s very difficult to define what is a risk and what is not. At the beginning of this year, I took all the variables in place, since some of them were external. I took out a bank loan believing the investment I would make was a safe bet.

Truth is, the factors beyond my control didn’t align as planned, and now I find myself in debt, trying to activate Plan B, which in the long term would help resolve the financial issue I took on by taking a risk.

But life is like that—we can plan everything down to the last detail, yet events happen the way they do, often defying the laws of probability!

Still, both taking risks and winning or failing are part of humanity’s daily life—and I believe that without them—especially without taking risks—we’d still be living in caves for fear of the unknown.

It’s no coincidence that a popular saying goes:

“Beneath risk lies reward”

And it’s entirely true. If we never leave our so-called comfort zone, we’ll remain stuck in the same situation, which likely isn’t the most favorable, nor the one we ideally desire for ourselves and our families.

That’s why I believe it’s important to become aware that every decision we make in life involves inherent risk—and that we must be able to calculate it to try to make the best decision. However, we must also be aware that we cannot have all factors under our control, and therefore, sometimes the outcomes may not be what we expected. Even so, we gain experience and knowledge, which places us in a better position than if we had never taken the risk at all.

Como bien se dijo en el planteamiento del tema de la semana #w170e2 el ser humano, y también los animales, toman riesgos diariamente. Algunos son de vital importancia y otros lo son en menor escala, pero aún así, todos influyen en el rumbo de la vida.

Particularmente creo que tomar riesgos es más un arte que una ciencia, ya que involucra muchas veces lo que llamamos intuición o sexto sentido, y casi siempre se deben asumir sin tener toda la información relevante, por eso se denomina riesgo posiblemente.

Toda actividad humana implica un riesgo, algunos de ellos son tomados por terceros, pero nos afectan por el resto de nuestras vidas.

Pero limitémonos a los riesgos que asumimos por nuestra propia voluntad. La carrera que elegimos suele ser una de las decisiones mas trascendentales de nuestras vidas. Muchas veces se debe asumir el riesgo de estudiar lo que deseamos teniendo en cuenta la posibilidad de que no obtengamos luego una oferta laboral en ese campo.

Otras veces calculamos el riesgo en términos monetarios, por ejemplo, si estudiamos X carrera, ganaríamos más dinero que si estudiasemos lo que nuestra vocación desea. Pero no calculamos el riesgo de terminar frustrados e infelices.

Es muy difícil definir qué es un riesgo y qué no. A inicios de año asumí un riesgo sin tener resueltos todos los factores, ya que algunos eran externos. Asumí un crédito bancario pensando que la inversión que haría sería segura.

La verdad resultó en que los factores que no estaban bajo mi control no se alinearon como había planeado, y ahora me encuentro endeudada y tratando de poner en marcha el plan B, que a largo plazo me ayudaría a resolver el problema financiero que asumí por tomar un riesgo.

Pero la vida es así, podemos planificar hasta el último detalle, pero luego los acontecimientos ocurren como ocurren, muchas veces desafiando las leyes de probabilidades!

No obstante, tanto tomar riesgos, como fallar o ganar, son parte de la vida cotidiana de la humanidad, y creo que sin ellas, en especial sin asumir riesgos, aún estaríamos viviendo en cavernas por el miedo a tomar riesgos.

No en vano se acuñó una popular frase que dice así:

"Bajo el riesgo está la ganancia"

Y es totalmente cierta, si nunca abandonamos nuestra famosa zona de confort, permaneceremos siempre en la misma situación, que probablemente no sea la más favorable ni la que idealmente deseamos para nosotros y nuestra familia.

Por eso creo importante tomar conciencia de que cada decisión que tomamos a lo largo de la vida implica un riesgo inherente, y que debemos ser capaces de calcularlo, para tratar de tomar la mejor decisión, aunque también debemos ser conscientes de que no podemos tener todos los factores bajo nuestro control, y que por lo tanto, es posible que algunas veces los resultados no sean los que esperamos, pero aún así ganamos en experiencia y aprendizaje, lo que nos lleva a estar en una mejor situación de la que estaríamos si nunca hubiésemos asumido riesgo alguno.
