RE: Hypocrisy and Those Eternal Scare Tactics…

You are viewing a single comment's thread:

The income tax of today was pitched as a millionaire tax in 1913. It's perfectly reasonable to question any new tax which will inevitably expand to feed the bottomless maw of government.

While taxation may be "theft," it also seems an inevitable evile until broader humanity reaches a developmental level where people actually act with "rational self-interest," outside theoretical think tanks populated by educated individuals of above average intelligence. The problem isn't the idea, but the people.

Mostly, the irony here was that the people clamoring the loudest to return to America's "greatness" while screaming about taxes describes at time in US history that had the HIGHEST taxes...

Correlation is not causation, and besides, I would not argue that the 1950s and 60s were peak greatness.

Nor would I... but a lot of MAGA Republicans seem to think that the perfect world was that of "Father Knows Best" and "Leave it to Beaver."

And quite right. Correlation is not causation. But there's an awful lot of people who insist that you "can't" have a good economy if taxes are higher.

Post-WW2, government massively cut spending, leading to a recession on paper, but an economic boom for the public. Taxation, public debt, and spending were all a far smaller part of the economic picture, and the "high tax rates" were for the highest brackets only, and tempered by loopholes galore. Income taxes for the working class were a temporary wartime emergency that never ended.

I'm willing to compromise on corporate taxes, since corporations owe their legal status entirely to political privilege. Beg the state for protection? Pay their protection money.
